This position offers experienced nursing professionals the opportunity to join the North West Provincial Government’s health and social development team as a Professional Nurse Grade 1, based within the Chief Directorate for Districts and Institutional Support Management. The vacancies are located in two distinct districts: two posts at Sonop Old Age Home in Bojanala, and three posts at JB Marks Treatment Centre in Dr Kenneth Kaunda District. These are institutional posts that require a dedicated nurse who can deliver comprehensive care in a residential or treatment facility setting, working under the direction of the district health and social development structures.

The core purpose of the role is to provide holistic, specialised nursing care to patients and residents, ensuring that all clinical practice aligns with the scope of practice and nursing standards set by the relevant health facility. This includes managing medication safely and accurately, monitoring admission and discharge criteria, and maintaining proper, complete records for every patient. The nurse will also be expected to provide emergency care, including overtime and standby duties, which is essential for institutional settings where round-the-clock care may be required. In addition to direct patient care, the role involves managing the utilisation of resources effectively, so that equipment, consumables, and staff time are used efficiently within the facility.

An important part of this position is the educational and supportive function. The Professional Nurse will provide educational services to patients, families, and possibly junior staff, and must offer effective support to the nursing team. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team is essential to ensure quality nursing care and positive patient outcomes. The nurse will also need to ensure that the Patients’ Rights Charter and Batho Pele principles are implemented and upheld in daily practice, meaning a patient-centred, respectful, and accountable approach is non-negotiable. Furthermore, the role demands the ability to work effectively, cooperatively, and amicably with people from diverse intellectual, cultural, racial, and religious backgrounds, reflecting the inclusive values of the public health sector.

To be considered, applicants must hold a basic qualification in nursing, either a Diploma or Degree, or have recognisable nursing experience after registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Professional Nurse. Current registration with the SANC is mandatory. The ability to implement elementary functions according to the scope of practice is also required, ensuring that the nurse can competently and safely carry out all duties within the boundaries of their professional mandate.
