This position offers an exciting opportunity for a qualified soil scientist to contribute to agricultural research and natural resource management within the KwaZulu-Natal provincial government. Based at the Cedara Research Station, the role is structured as a Professional Scientist Grade A, B, or C under the Occupation Specific Dispensation (OSD) remuneration system, reflecting a career path for experienced scientists. The successful candidate will operate within a scientific environment focused on sustainable soil management, agricultural productivity, and the conservation of natural resources, aligning with broader provincial and national priorities for food security and climate resilience.
Applicants must hold an NQF level 08 qualification in Soil Science and be registered with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP) as a Professional Soil Scientist. A valid driver’s licence is essential, as fieldwork is likely to be a component of the role. In addition, the position requires at least three years of post-qualification experience in a soil science environment. The ideal candidate will possess a robust theoretical and practical understanding of soil science principles, including soil classification, survey methods, and land capability assessment. Deep knowledge of soil fertility, chemistry, physics, biology, health, and sustainable management practices is expected, along with expertise in soil conservation, erosion control, land degradation, rehabilitation, and climate-smart agricultural techniques. Familiarity with agricultural research methodology, data collection, analysis, interpretation, and technical reporting is also critical. The role demands awareness of relevant legislation, policies, norms, and standards governing natural resource management, conservation of agricultural resources, and public administration, including the Public Service Act, Public Finance Management Act, and related directives.
The core duties involve developing and implementing methodologies, policies, systems, and procedures related to soil science. The scientist will perform scientific analysis and regulatory functions, ensuring compliance with applicable standards. Conducting research and development is a central responsibility, requiring the design and execution of studies that generate actionable insights for farmers and policymakers. Human capital development forms part of the role, meaning the incumbent may mentor junior staff or contribute to knowledge transfer. Administrative and professional duties, such as project planning, monitoring, and reporting, will also be undertaken. Strong technical skills are required, including soil survey and classification, land capability assessment, interpretation of laboratory results, and proficiency in GIS and computer-aided applications. Data analysis, applied research, technical report writing, and scientific presentation are essential, as are generic competencies like analytical thinking, problem-solving, communication, stakeholder engagement, planning, professional judgement, financial awareness, adaptability, ethics, and accountability.
Candidates should note that this is a public service position with specific application and selection conditions. Shortlisted applicants will undergo two pre-entry assessments: a practical exercise testing technical and generic suitability, and an integrity assessment. Foreign qualifications must be evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority. The department promotes ethical conduct and professionalism, and applicants must ensure their applications are complete and compliant with the prescribed procedures to avoid disqualification. This role is ideal for a dedicated scientist seeking to apply advanced soil science expertise to real-world agricultural challenges within a government research setting.
