This professional scientist post is based at Cedara Research Station and sits within the Analytical Services unit, specialising in biodatametrics and bioinformatics. The successful candidate will operate as a registered Professional Scientist, applying advanced statistical and computational techniques to agricultural research. The role is graded under the Occupation Specific Dispensation (OSD) for scientists and offers an all-inclusive remuneration package commensurate with the appointed grade. As part of a provincial agricultural research environment, the incumbent will contribute to the scientific rigour and regulatory compliance of the department's analytical services, supporting evidence-based decision-making and innovation in the agricultural sector.
Applicants must hold an NQF 8 four-year Bachelor of Science Honours degree in Biometry or a related qualification with a strong statistical sciences component. Compulsory registration with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP) as a Professional Scientist in Agricultural or Mathematical Science is required, along with a valid driver's licence. A minimum of three years' post-qualification experience in experimental design, statistics and computing for the natural sciences is essential. The role demands a sound and broad knowledge of scientific research methodology, including the application of practices and techniques for field, laboratory and controlled environmental experiments, as well as statistical data analysis, programming and database functions. Familiarity with agricultural research methodologies, scientific models, and relevant legislation such as the Labour Relations Act, Public Service Act, Public Administration Management Act, Basic Conditions of Employment Act and departmental HRM and HRD policies is also expected.
Key duties include developing and implementing methodologies, policies, systems and procedures; performing agricultural scientific analysis and regulatory functions; conducting research and development; contributing to human capital development; and carrying out administrative functions. The scientist will need strong technical skills in project management, scientific methodologies, computer-aided scientific applications, legal compliance, technical report writing, data analysis, policy development and presentation, as well as mentoring. Generic competencies such as decision-making, team leadership, analytical thinking, creativity, financial management, customer focus, communication, networking, computer literacy, people management, planning, conflict and change management, problem solving, innovation and the ability to work under pressure with minimal supervision are equally important.
This is a demanding scientific role that requires self-discipline and self-drive. The department follows a structured recruitment process: applicants must complete the prescribed Z83 application form and submit a comprehensive CV, and only shortlisted candidates will be asked to provide certified copies of qualifications and supporting documents. Foreign qualifications must be evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA). Shortlisted candidates will also undergo two pre-entry assessments, one practical and one integrity-based. If no feedback is received within three months of the closing date, applicants should consider their application unsuccessful. This post offers an opportunity for a qualified scientist to make a meaningful contribution to agricultural research and analytical services within the public sector.
