This position is for a Professional Nurse Specialty at Thusanong District Hospital, specifically in the advanced midwifery and neonatology unit. It is a re-advertised vacancy within the public health sector, graded as PNB1-2, and offers an opportunity for an experienced, specialised nurse to take on a leadership and clinical role in a hospital setting. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering comprehensive nursing care to patients in the maternity and neonatal specialty unit, while also supporting other wards as an all-rounder when the need arises. The role requires a strong understanding of nursing legislation, ethical practice, and the ability to work under pressure in a demanding clinical environment.

Applicants must hold a Grade 12 certificate and meet one of the recognised nursing qualifications, such as the basic R425 diploma or degree in nursing, a four-year Bachelor of Nursing degree under R174, or a three-year Diploma in General Nursing under R171, all of which must allow registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse or General Nurse. In addition, a post-basic qualification in Advanced Midwifery and Neonatology is essential, along with current SANC registration for the 2026/2027 period. For appointment at Grade 1, a minimum of four years of appropriate nursing experience after registration is required. For Grade 2, candidates need at least fourteen years of recognisable nursing experience, of which at least ten years must be in the specific specialty after obtaining the post-basic qualification. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, computer literacy, and the ability to maintain good relations with patients and colleagues are also required.

The core duties include providing cost-effective, efficient and equitable nursing treatment and care in line with the scope of practice and facility standards. The nurse will compile unit-based statistics and submit them to the Operational Manager for verification, act as shift leader when necessary, and coordinate effective training and research projects for the maternity unit. Safe patient care practices, proper management of patient records according to legislation, and management of stock and equipment in line with clinical and economic requirements are all key responsibilities. The role also demands a clear demonstration of understanding of nursing legislation and related legal and ethical practices.

Candidates should note that this is a re-advertisement, and the application process requires a fully completed and signed new Z83 form accompanied by a comprehensive CV. Only shortlisted applicants will be asked to submit certified copies of qualifications and other documents. Foreign qualifications must be accompanied by a SAQA evaluation certificate, and non-South African citizens must provide proof of permanent residence when shortlisted. Successful candidates will be subjected to personnel suitability checks, including criminal record, financial, qualification, citizenship, reference and employment verification, and will be required to enter into an employment contract and performance agreement. A security clearance and pre-entry assessments, including a practical exercise and an integrity test, may also be required. The department reserves the right not to fill the post, and applicants who do not hear within three months of the closing date should consider their application unsuccessful.
