The Limpopo Department of Health is offering sessional appointments for professional nurses with a recognised specialty qualification, under the OSD-graded Professional Nurse Specialty PN-B1 post. These are not full-time permanent posts but rather hourly sessional appointments, with each nurse able to work a maximum of 20 sessions per week, where one session equals one hour. Successful candidates will be placed on a sessional professional nurses database and deployed to one of the specified hospitals across the Capricorn, Mopani, Sekhukhune, Vhembe and Waterberg districts. Hospitals include Pietersburg, Mankweng, Letaba, St Ritas, Philadelphia, Tshilidzini and Mokopane, among others. The specialty disciplines in demand are operational theatre nursing, critical care adult ICU, child nursing or paediatrics, child critical care ICU, trauma nursing, advanced midwifery and neonatal nursing science, ophthalmology, orthopaedics and renal nursing.
Applicants must hold a basic R425 qualification, meaning a diploma or degree in nursing or an equivalent qualification that allows registration with the South African Nursing Council as a professional nurse. In addition, a post-basic nursing qualification in the relevant specialty is required, with a minimum duration of one year and accredited with the SANC, except for neonatal ICU nursing where the requirement is waived. Current registration with the SANC as a professional nurse in the appropriate specialty is essential. For appointment at Grade 1, a minimum of four years appropriate or recognisable experience in nursing after registration as a professional nurse is required. For Grade 2, candidates need at least fourteen years of appropriate experience in nursing after registration, of which ten years must be specific experience in the relevant specialty after obtaining the post-basic qualification. Because these are sessional posts, remuneration is calculated on sessional rates approved by the Department of Public Service and Administration, and the rate is determined by the candidate's recognised experience after SANC registration.
The role demands strong clinical and professional skills. Nurses must have solid knowledge of nursing care processes and procedures within their specialty area, as well as good communication, report writing, facilitation, liaison, networking and problem-solving abilities. Information management skills and computer literacy are also required. A willingness to work shifts, flexi-hours, weekends, public holidays and overtime when needed is a key condition of the sessional appointment. In terms of day-to-day responsibilities, the professional nurse will provide direction and supervision for the implementation of the nursing care plan and ensure quality patient care. They must practise nursing and healthcare in line with applicable standards, quality indicators, legislation and regulations. Collaboration within a multidisciplinary clinical team is central to the role, as is the efficient and effective use of human, material and physical resources. These sessional posts are ideal for specialist nurses seeking flexible, hourly-based work within public hospitals while contributing to specialised clinical services across Limpopo.
