This sessional post offers experienced professional nurses the opportunity to work as a Specialist Nurse on a part-time, hourly basis within selected public hospitals across the Limpopo province. Appointments are made at Grade 1 or Grade 2 level, and each nurse may work a maximum of twenty one-hour sessions per week, providing flexibility while supporting critical clinical services. The role is based at hospitals in the Capricorn, Mopani, Sekhukhune, Vhembe and Waterberg districts, including Pietersburg, Mankweng, Letaba, St Ritas, Philadelphia, Tshilidzini and Mokopane hospitals. Specialty disciplines covered by this recruitment include operational theatre nursing, adult critical care (ICU), paediatric and child nursing, child critical care nursing, trauma nursing, advanced midwifery and neonatal nursing science, ophthalmology, orthopaedics and renal nursing.

To qualify, candidates must hold a basic R425 qualification in nursing, such as a diploma or degree that permits registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Professional Nurse. In addition, a post-basic qualification in one of the recognised specialty areas is required, with a minimum duration of one year and accredited by SANC, except in the case of neonatal ICU nursing. Current registration with SANC as a Professional Nurse in the relevant specialty is essential. Appointment at Grade 1 requires at least four years of appropriate nursing experience after registration in general nursing, while Grade 2 requires fourteen years of experience, of which ten years must be in the relevant specialty after completing the post-basic qualification. Candidates must be willing to work shifts, flexi-hours, weekends, public holidays and overtime when required. The sessional remuneration is determined according to DPSA-approved sessional rates, based on recognised experience after SANC registration.

Successful appointees will be responsible for directing and supervising the implementation of the nursing care plan to ensure quality patient care. They will practise nursing and healthcare in line with professional standards, quality indicators, legislation and regulations. Working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary clinical team is a key part of the role, as is the efficient and effective use of human, material and physical resources. Strong knowledge of nursing care processes and procedures in the relevant specialty is required, along with good communication, report writing, facilitation, liaison, networking and problem-solving skills. Information management skills and computer literacy are also important.

This advertisement forms part of a broader provincial recruitment drive for sessional professional nurses. In addition to the specialty posts described above, the same database initiative also includes professional nurse with midwifery sessional appointments, available at numerous hospitals across the Vhembe, Waterberg, Capricorn and Mopani districts sequentially. These posts are also subject to sessional rates and similar requirements. Applicants are encouraged to consider the specific hospital and specialty application links provided for each position, as the selection process is administered through a central sessional nurse database. Equal employment opportunity and affirmative action principles apply, and the department may give preference to candidates from designated groups in line with its equity targets. These sessional appointments are particularly suitable for experienced nurses seeking flexible working arrangements while contributing to specialist care in the public health sector.
