This advertisement invites professional nurses with recognised specialty qualifications to apply for sessional appointments as Professional Nurse: Specialty, graded at PN-B1 Grade 1 or 2, within the Limpopo Department of Health. These positions operate on an hourly session basis, with one session equating to one hour and a maximum of twenty sessions per week per nurse. Sessional appointments are available at hospitals across the Capricorn, Mopani, Sekhukhune, Vhembe and Waterberg districts, specifically at Pietersburg, Mankweng, Letaba, St Ritas, Philadelphia, Tshilidzini and Mokopane hospitals. Successful applicants will be considered for placement on a professional nurses database for sessional employment, with remuneration paid according to approved government sessional rates, linked to the applicable grade and the nurse’s recognisable experience after registration with the South African Nursing Council.

The specialties in demand are broad and include operational theatre nursing, adult critical care, child nursing, child critical care, trauma nursing, advanced midwifery and neonatal nursing science, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, renal nursing and paediatrics. Applicants must hold a basic R425 qualification, such as a diploma or degree in nursing, that allows registration as a professional nurse with the South African Nursing Council. In addition, a post-basic nursing qualification in one of the listed specialty areas, accredited by the SANC and of at least one year’s duration, is required, except for neonatal ICU nursing where a separate provision applies. Current registration with the SANC as a professional nurse in the relevant specialty is also essential. For appointment at Grade 1, a minimum of four years of appropriate or recognisable nursing experience after registration in general nursing is required. For Grade 2, candidates must have at least fourteen years of such experience, of which ten years must be in the relevant specialty after obtaining the post-basic qualification.

The core duties involve providing direction and supervision for the implementation of nursing care plans, ensuring quality patient care and practising nursing in accordance with established standards, quality indicators, legislation and regulations. Nurses will work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary clinical team and are expected to utilise human, material and physical resources efficiently and effectively. The role demands sound knowledge of nursing care processes and procedures specific to the specialty area, as well as good communication, report writing, facilitation, liaison, networking and problem-solving skills. Information management skills and computer literacy are also required. Candidates must be willing to work shifts, flexible hours, weekends, public holidays and overtime when necessary. The broader advertisement also separately lists sessional appointments for Professional Nurses with Midwifery at numerous hospitals in the Vhembe, Waterberg, Capricorn and Mopani districts under the same sessional framework, offering further opportunities for nurses with midwifery qualifications. These positions are part of the department’s efforts to maintain a ready pool of specialised nursing staff across rural and regional hospitals in Limpopo.
