This sessional specialist nursing post is based at hospitals across the five districts of Limpopo, offering experienced professional nurses the opportunity to work up to twenty hour-long sessions per week. The vacancy is graded at PN-B1, with appointment possible at Grade 1 or Grade 2 depending on experience, and covers a wide range of specialty disciplines including operating theatre nursing, adult critical care, child nursing, child critical care, trauma, advanced midwifery and neonatal nursing science, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, renal nursing and paediatric nursing. Centres include Pietersburg and Mankweng Hospitals in Capricorn, Letaba in Mopani, St Ritas and Philadelphia in Sekhukhune, Tshilidzini in Vhembe and Mokopane in Waterberg, with each institution recruiting separately for each specialty.
To be considered, candidates must hold a basic R425 nursing qualification, namely a diploma or degree in nursing or an equivalent qualification that allows registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse. They also need a post-basic nursing qualification in one of the listed specialty areas, accredited by the SANC and of at least one year’s duration, with an exception for Neonatal ICU nursing. Current registration with the SANC in the relevant specialty is essential. For appointment at Grade 1, a minimum of four years’ appropriate nursing experience is required after registration as a Professional Nurse in General Nursing. For Grade 2, candidates need at least fourteen years’ appropriate nursing experience, including ten years in the relevant specialty after completing the post-basic qualification. The role demands a willingness to work shifts, flexi-hours, weekends, public holidays and overtime when required.
Applicants must demonstrate sound knowledge of nursing care processes and procedures in their specialty area, as well as strong communication, report writing, facilitation, liaison, networking and problem-solving abilities. Information management skills and computer literacy are also expected.
The key performance areas include providing direction and supervision for the implementation of the nursing care plan, ensuring quality patient care, and practising nursing and healthcare in line with relevant standards, quality indicators, legislation and regulations. The nurse will work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary clinical team and must utilise human, material and physical resources efficiently and effectively.
This is a sessional appointment, with remuneration determined according to the sessional rates approved by the Department of Public Service and Administration, based on the candidate’s appropriate and recognisable experience after registration with the SANC. The Limpopo Department of Health is establishing a sessional professional nurses database for these specialty posts, and applications are made per district, hospital and specialty, with a specific application link for each combination. Because this is a sessional arrangement, the successful candidate will not be appointed on a full-time basis but will be called upon to render services in hour-long sessions up to a maximum of twenty per week. All nurses appointed must maintain their SANC registration and meet the inherent requirements of the post throughout the period of service.
