The Limpopo Department of Health is building a sessional database for specialist professional nurses across multiple hospitals in its five districts: Capricorn, Mopani, Sekhukhune, Vhembe and Waterberg. The appointment is for Professional Nurse: Specialty at PN-B1 Grade 1 or Grade 2 level, and is structured as sessional work — a maximum of 20 one-hour sessions per week per nurse. This is not a permanent full-time post but a flexible, shift-based arrangement to meet specialist nursing needs in public hospitals. The specialties sought include Operational Theatre, Critical Care Adult (ICU), Child Nursing (Paediatrics), Child Critical Care Nursing (ICU), Trauma, Advanced Midwifery and Neonatal Nursing Science, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics, Renal, and Paediatric/Child Nursing. A separate but related sessional opportunity exists for Professional Nurses with Midwifery at Grade 1 to Grade 3, based at a wider list of hospitals in the same districts, including tertiary, district and specialised TB hospitals.
To be considered, candidates must hold a basic R425 qualification — a Diploma or Degree in Nursing, or equivalent — that permits registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse. In addition, applicants need a post-basic nursing qualification in one of the listed specialty areas, with a minimum duration of one year and accredited by the SANC, except in the case of Neonatal ICU nursing. Current registration with the SANC as a Professional Nurse in the appropriate specialty is essential. For appointment at Grade 1, a minimum of four years of appropriate and recognisable nursing experience after registration as a Professional Nurse in General Nursing is required. For Grade 2, candidates must have at least fourteen years of such experience, of which ten years must be in the relevant specialty after obtaining the post-basic qualification. Sessional remuneration is graded according to the DPSA-approved sessional rates and is based on the nurse’s appropriate and recognisable experience since SANC registration, so the rate will vary between grades and individuals.
The core duties involve directing and supervising the implementation of the nursing care plan, ensuring quality patient care, and practising nursing in line with professional standards, quality indicators, legislation and regulations. Successful candidates will work collaboratively within multidisciplinary clinical teams, and must use human, material and physical resources efficiently and effectively. The role also demands strong knowledge of nursing care processes and procedures in the relevant specialty, as well as good communication, report writing, facilitation, liaison, networking, problem-solving and information management skills. Computer literacy is required.
Applicants must be willing to work shifts, flexi-hours, weekends, public holidays and overtime as needed. Each hospital and specialty discipline has a specific application link, so candidates must select the correct centre and specialty when applying. These sessional appointments contribute to a provincial database of professional nurses available for temporary or part-time specialist coverage, helping the department maintain critical services across its hospitals. This is an opportunity for suitably experienced specialist nurses to offer their skills on a session-by-session basis within the Limpopo public health system.
