This sessional appointment offers experienced professional nurses the opportunity to work in a specialist capacity within Limpopo’s public hospital system, under the Department of Health’s Professional Nurses Sessional Database. The post is graded as Professional Nurse: Specialty (PN-B1), with appointments available at Grade 1 and Grade 2, and is limited to a maximum of twenty one-hour sessions per week per nurse. The role is based at a defined set of district hospitals across Capricorn, Mopani, Sekhukhune, Vhembe and Waterberg districts, including institutions such as Pietersburg, Mankweng, Letaba, St Ritas, Philadelphia, Tshilidzini and Mokopane hospitals. Successful candidates will join a roster of specialty nurses supporting high-acuity and specialist units within these facilities.

The specialty disciplines open for this recruitment are broad and include operational theatre nursing, critical care adult ICU, child nursing or paediatrics, child critical care ICU, trauma nursing, advanced midwifery and neonatal nursing science, ophthalmology, orthopaedics and renal nursing. To qualify, applicants must hold a basic R425 nursing qualification, namely a diploma or degree in nursing that permits registration with the South African Nursing Council as a professional nurse. A post-basic qualification in the relevant specialty, accredited by the SANC and lasting at least one year, is also required, with the exception of neonatal ICU nursing. Current SANC registration in the appropriate specialty is essential. For Grade 1, a minimum of four years of appropriate nursing experience after general professional registration is needed. Grade 2 applicants require at least fourteen years of post-registration nursing experience, of which ten years must be in the specific specialty after obtaining the post-basic qualification. Since these are sessional posts, candidates must be willing to work shifts, flexi-hours, weekends, public holidays and overtime as demanded by patient need.

The core responsibilities include providing direction and supervision in implementing nursing care plans, ensuring quality patient care, and practising within the framework of relevant legislation, regulations and nursing standards. Professional nurses will work collaboratively within multidisciplinary clinical teams and are expected to use human, material and physical resources efficiently. Strong knowledge of nursing care processes in the relevant specialty is essential, as are good communication, report-writing, facilitation, liaison, networking, problem-solving and information management skills, alongside computer literacy. The remuneration for the sessional appointment is calculated according to DPSA-approved sessional rates and depends on the applicant’s recognised experience after SANC registration. This notice also includes a separate sessional recruitment stream for professional nurses with midwifery, spanning additional hospitals in the same districts, although the detailed requirements and duties for that stream are not set out in this particular advertisement. The position is well suited to specialist nurses seeking flexible, sessional work within the public health sector while contributing to critical care and theatre services across Limpopo.
