This vacancy offers registered professional nurses the opportunity to serve on a sessional basis within the Limpopo Department of Health, specifically in specialty nursing disciplines at designated hospitals across the Capricorn, Mopani, Sekhukhune, Vhembe and Waterberg districts. The post is structured as a Professional Nurse Specialty at PN-B1 Grade 1 or Grade 2, with appointments limited to a maximum of twenty one-hour sessions per week per nurse. This makes the role suitable for experienced nurses seeking flexible, part-time engagement while contributing specialised clinical care in the public health sector. These sessional posts form part of the department’s professional nurses database for sessional employment, which supports the filling of temporary or part-time nursing needs across the listed hospitals.
The specialty disciplines covered include operational theatre nursing, adult critical care or ICU, child nursing or paediatrics, child critical care nursing, trauma nursing, advanced midwifery and neonatal nursing science, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, renal nursing, and paediatric or child nursing. Successful appointees will be placed at hospitals such as Pietersburg, Mankweng, Letaba, St Ritas, Philadelphia, Tshilidzini and Mokopane, depending on the specialty and the hospital’s needs. The role requires a minimum basic R425 qualification, meaning a diploma or degree in nursing or an equivalent qualification that permits registration with the South African Nursing Council as a professional nurse. In addition, candidates must hold a post-basic nursing qualification in one of the listed specialty areas, with a duration of at least one year and accredited by the SANC, except in the case of neonatal ICU nursing. Current registration with the SANC in the relevant specialty is essential.
For appointment at Grade 1, applicants need at least four years of appropriate or recognisable nursing experience after registration as a professional nurse in general nursing. For Grade 2, the requirement is at least fourteen years of such experience, of which ten years must be in the relevant specialty after obtaining the post-basic qualification. Sessional remuneration is determined according to DPSA-approved sessional rates, based on the nurse’s appropriate and recognisable experience after SANC registration, with different rates for Grade 1 and Grade 2. The nature of the work demands a willingness to work shifts, flexi-hours, weekends, public holidays and overtime as required.
The key performance areas include providing direction and supervision for the implementation of nursing care plans and ensuring quality patient care; practising nursing and healthcare in line with relevant standards, quality indicators, legislation and regulations; working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary clinical team; and using human, material and physical resources efficiently and effectively. Candidates should therefore possess strong knowledge of nursing care processes and procedures in their specialty, as well as good communication, report writing, facilitation, liaison, networking and problem-solving skills. Information management skills and computer literacy are also required.
In addition to the specialty posts, the same sessional appointment framework applies to Professional Nurse with Midwifery positions at Grade 1 to 3, with a similar maximum of twenty sessions per week, across a broader list of hospitals in the Vhembe, Waterberg, Capricorn and Mopani districts. These include facilities such as Elim, Siloam, Donald Frazer, Malamulele, Messina, Louis Trichardt, Hayani, Ellisras, Witpoort, Warmbaths, FH Odendaal, George Masebe, Thabazimbi, Voortrekker, Helene Franz, Seshego, WF Knobel, Botlokwa, Lebowakgomo, Zebediela, Pietersburg-Mankweng Complex, Thabamoopo, Nkhensani, Dr CN Phatudi, Maphutha L Malatjie, Kgapane, Sekororo, Van Velden, Letaba and Evuxakeni hospitals. These midwifery posts are remunerated on the same sessional basis, and applicants would need to meet the relevant SANC registration and experience requirements for midwifery practice. This vacancy therefore represents a significant opportunity for qualified specialist and midwifery nurses to contribute to public healthcare delivery in Limpopo on a flexible sessional basis.
