This sessional vacancy is aimed at experienced specialist nurses who wish to work flexibly on an hourly basis within Limpopo’s public hospital network. The post of Professional Nurse: Specialty is graded at PN-B1, with appointment at either Grade 1 or Grade 2 depending on the candidate’s years of nursing experience, and is structured as a sessional appointment of up to 20 one-hour sessions per week. Successful appointees will be placed at one of the listed hospitals across the Capricorn, Mopani, Sekhukhune, Vhembe, and Waterberg districts, and will practice within one of the specified specialty disciplines: operational theatre, adult critical care (ICU), child nursing (paediatrics), child critical care nursing, trauma, advanced midwifery and neonatal nursing science, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, or renal nursing.

Candidates must hold the basic R425 qualification — a diploma or degree in nursing, or an equivalent qualification that allows registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Professional Nurse — and must have completed a post-basic nursing qualification of at least one year, accredited by SANC, in the relevant specialty, with the exception of neonatal ICU nursing. Current registration with SANC in the appropriate specialty is essential. For appointment at Grade 1, applicants need at least four years of appropriate, recognisable nursing experience after registration in general nursing. For Grade 2, the requirement is at least fourteen years of post-registration nursing experience, of which ten years must be appropriate experience in the particular specialty after obtaining the post-basic qualification.

The role requires strong clinical and non-clinical abilities. Nurses appointed to these sessional posts will be responsible for directing and supervising the implementation of nursing care plans and ensuring quality patient care. They must practice nursing and healthcare in accordance with professional standards, quality indicators, legislation, and regulations relevant to the field. They will work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary clinical team, so good communication, report writing, facilitation, liaison, networking, and problem-solving skills are essential. Information management skills and computer literacy are also required. In addition, appointees must use human, material, and physical resources efficiently and effectively as part of their key performance areas.

Because these are sessional appointments, working hours are flexible but irregular: appointees must be willing to work shifts, flexi-hours, weekends, public holidays, and overtime when required. Remuneration is set according to DPSA-approved sessional rates and is determined by the nurse’s appropriate, recognisable experience after SANC registration. The same advertisement also lists sessional posts for Professional Nurses with Midwifery at Grade 1 to 3, offering up to 20 sessions per week across numerous hospitals in the Vhembe, Waterberg, Capricorn, and Mopani districts. Applications for the specialty posts are linked to specific district hospitals and disciplines, so candidates are expected to identify their preferred centre and specialty when considering the opportunity. These appointments form part of a broader professional nurses database for sessional recruitment within the provincial health system.
