This is a sessional professional nurse post within the Limpopo Department of Health, offering opportunities for specialist nurses and for professional nurses with midwifery to work on a session-by-session basis at public hospitals across the province. The specialty post is advertised as Professional Nurse: Specialty PN-B1 Grade 1–2, while a separate stream covers Professional Nurse with Midwifery Grade 1–3. Both are sessional appointments, with a maximum of 20 sessions per week per nurse, where one session equals one hour. Remuneration is set according to DPSA-approved sessional rates and is based on the nurse's appropriate and recognisable experience after registration with the South African Nursing Council.

Specialty posts are available at Pietersburg and Mankweng hospitals in Capricorn, Letaba Hospital in Mopani, St Ritas and Philadelphia hospitals in Sekhukhune, Tshilidzini Hospital in Vhembe, and Mokopane Hospital in Waterberg. The specialty disciplines include operational theatre, critical care adult ICU, child nursing and paediatrics, child critical care ICU, trauma, advanced midwifery and neonatal nursing science, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, renal, and paediatric and child nursing. Midwifery posts are available at numerous hospitals in Vhembe, Waterberg, Capricorn and Mopani districts, including Elim, Siloam, Donald Frazer, Malamulele, Messina, Louis Trichardt, Tshilidzini, Hayani, Ellisras, Witpoort, Warmbaths, FH Odendaal and MDR TB, George Masebe, Thabazimbi, Voortrekker, Mokopane, Helene Franz, Seshego, WF Knobel, Botlokwa, Lebowakgomo, Zebediela, Pietersburg-Mankweng Complex, Thabamoopo, Nkhensani, Dr CN Phatudi, Maphutha L Malatjie, Kgapane, Sekororo, Van Velden, Letaba and Evuxakeni hospitals.

To qualify for the specialty post, candidates need a basic R425 diploma or degree in nursing, or an equivalent qualification that allows registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse. They must also hold a post-basic nursing qualification in one of the listed specialties, with a minimum duration of one year and accredited by SANC, except for Neonatal ICU nursing, and must have current registration with SANC in the relevant specialty. Grade 1 requires at least four years of appropriate nursing experience after registration in general nursing, while Grade 2 requires fourteen years of experience, including ten years in the relevant specialty after obtaining the post-basic qualification. Candidates must be willing to work shifts, flexi-hours, weekends, public holidays and overtime.

The core duties include directing and supervising the implementation of the nursing care plan, ensuring quality patient care, practising nursing in line with standards and regulations, collaborating with the multidisciplinary clinical team, and using human, material and physical resources efficiently.
