This is a sessional appointment opportunity for experienced professional nurses to work in specialist areas within public health facilities across Limpopo. The posts are available at the Professional Nurse: Specialty level, graded as PN-B1 Grade 1 or Grade 2, with a maximum of twenty hourly sessions per week. These roles are based at hospitals in the Capricorn, Mopani, Sekhukhune, Vhembe and Waterberg districts, including Pietersburg, Mankweng, Letaba, St Ritas, Philadelphia, Tshilidzini and Mokopane hospitalscherry. Specialties being recruited include operational theatre nursing, adult critical care, child nursing, child critical care, trauma nursing, advanced midwifery and neonatal nursing science, ophthalmology, orthopaedics and renal nursing. In addition to the specialist nurse posts, the vacancy also covers sessional Professional Nurse with Midwifery positions at a broader list of hospitals in the same districts, under a similar sessional appointment arrangement with grade levels from one to three.
To qualify, candidates must hold a minimum basic R425 qualification, namely a diploma or degree in nursing, or an equivalent qualification that permits registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse. In addition, a post-basic nursing qualification in one of the listed specialty areas is required, with a duration of at least one year and accreditation by the South African Nursing Council, except for Neonatal ICU nursing where different rules apply. Current registration with the South African Nursing Council in the relevant specialty is essential. For appointment at Grade 1, a minimum of four years of appropriate and recognisable nursing experience after registration in General Nursing is expected. For Grade 2, candidates need at least fourteen years of such experience, of which ten years must be within the relevant specialty after obtaining the post-basic qualification. Successful applicants must be willing to work shifts, flexi-hours, weekends, public holidays and overtime as required by the service.
The role requires a strong working knowledge of nursing care processes and procedures in the relevant specialty. Applicants should demonstrate good communication, report writing, facilitation, liaison, networking and problem-solving skills, along with information management capabilities and computer literacy. Key performance areas include providing direction and supervision for implementing the nursing care plan, ensuring quality patient care, and practicing nursing and healthcare in line with professional standards, quality indicators, legislation and regulations. The nurse will work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary clinical team and must utilise human, material and physical resources efficiently and effectively.
Remuneration for these sessional posts is determined by the applicant's appropriate and recognisable experience after registration with the South African Nursing Council, as set out in the sessional rates approved by the Department of Public Service and Administration. The employment model uses a sessional database, meaning nurses are appointed to available hourly sessions up to a maximum of twenty per week. These positions offer flexibility for specialist nurses to contribute their expertise while maintaining the high standard of care expected in public health institutions. The advertisement does not specify equity targets, but all applicants should be prepared for the special working conditions associated with sessional, shift-based service delivery in hospital settings.
