This sessional professional nurse specialty post offers experienced, South African Nursing Council-registered nurses the chance to apply advanced clinical skills within public hospitals across Limpopo. Appointed on a sessional basis, with a maximum of twenty one-hour sessions per week, the role is available at hospitals in the Capricorn, Mopani, Sekhukhune, Vhembe and Waterberg districts, including facilities such as Pietersburg, Mankweng, Letaba, St Ritas, Philadelphia, Tshilidzini and Mokopane hospitals. Successful candidates will be placed in one of the recognised specialty disciplines, namely operational theatre, critical care adult (ICU), child nursing (paediatrics), child critical care nursing (ICU), trauma, advanced midwifery and neonatal nursing science, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, renal, or paediatric and child nursing. The sessional remuneration is determined according to the nurse’s recognised experience after registration with the South African Nursing Council, using the sessional rates approved by the Department of Public Service and Administration, and the post is graded as PN-B1.

Applicants must hold a basic R425 qualification, meaning a diploma or degree in nursing or an equivalent qualification that permits registration with the South African Nursing Council as a professional nurse. In addition, a post-basic nursing qualification in one of the specialty areas listed above is required, with a minimum duration of one year and accredited by the SANC, except in the case of neonatal ICU nursing. Current registration with the SANC as a professional nurse in the appropriate specialty is essential. For appointment at Grade 1, a minimum of four years of appropriate or recognisable nursing experience after registration as a professional nurse in general nursing is required. For Grade 2, candidates need at least fourteen years of such experience, of which ten years must be in the relevant specialty after obtaining the post-basic qualification. A willingness to work shifts, flexi-hours, weekends, public holidays and overtime is also a condition of the post.

The role demands strong clinical knowledge and skills in the nursing care processes and procedures specific to the chosen specialty. The professional nurse will be expected to provide direction and supervision for the implementation of nursing care plans, ensuring quality patient care at all times. Practice must align with relevant standards, quality indicators, legislation and regulations governing nursing and healthcare. The nurse will work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary clinical team, liaising with other health professionals to deliver comprehensive care. Efficient and effective use of human, material and physical resources is also a key responsibility. In addition, good communication, report writing, facilitation, liaison, networking and problem-solving skills are required, along with information management skills and computer literacy.

These sessional appointments form part of a professional nurses database for sessional work, and each hospital and specialty discipline has its own application link. Candidates should note the sessional nature of the post, which offers flexibility but also requires availability across the full range of shifts. The role is ideal for specialist nurses seeking to apply their advanced training in a public health setting while contributing to the delivery of safe, effective and regulation-compliant nursing care across Limpopo’s hospitals.
