The Limpopo Department of Health is filling sessional specialist nursing posts at several public hospitals across five district municipalities, offering qualified professional nurses the opportunity to work on a flexible, hourly-session basis. This PN-B1 Grade 1 and Grade 2 role is designed for nurses who hold a recognised specialty qualification and who want to contribute their clinical expertise to hospital services without committing to a full-time permanent schedule. A maximum of twenty one-hour sessions per week is allowed per appointee, making it a substantial but flexible working arrangement. Hospitals include Pietersburg and Mankweng in Capricorn, Letaba in Mopani, St Ritas and Philadelphia in Sekhukhune, Tshilidzini in Vhembe, and Mokopane in Waterberg, with specialty areas spanning operating theatre nursing, adult critical care, child nursing and child critical care, trauma, advanced midwifery and neonatal nursing science, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, and renal nursing.
Applicants must have a basic R425 nursing qualification, either a diploma or degree, or an equivalent qualification that allows registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse. In addition, they need a post-basic nursing qualification in one of the listed specialties, accredited by SANC and lasting at least one year, except for Neonatal ICU nursing. Current registration with SANC in the relevant specialty is essential. For appointment at Grade 1, a minimum of four years of appropriate nursing experience after registration in general nursing is required. Grade 2 applicants need at least fourteen years of post-registration experience, with ten years specifically in the relevant specialty after obtaining the post-basic qualification.
The core duties involve directing and supervising the implementation of the nursing care plan, ensuring quality patient care, and practicing nursing in line with professional standards, quality indicators, and relevant legislation. Sessional nurses will work collaboratively within multidisciplinary clinical teams and must use human, material, and physical resources efficiently and effectively. Strong knowledge of nursing care processes and procedures in the specialty area is essential, along with good communication, report-writing, facilitation, liaison, networking, problem-solving, information management, and computer skills. Appointees must be willing to work shifts, flexi-hours, weekends, public holidays, and overtime when required.
Remuneration is at DPSA-approved sessional rates, with the grade based on appropriate and recognisable experience after SANC registration. As an OSD-graded professional nurse post, this vacancy is part of a broader database of sessional professional nurses for the province. Candidates should note the inherent requirement of flexibility and shift work, and ensure they apply through the specified channel for their chosen hospital and specialty. These sessional appointments provide an important opportunity for experienced specialist nurses to support public healthcare delivery while enjoying a non-permanent working pattern.
