The Limpopo Department of Health is recruiting professional nurses on a sessional basis for specialist posts, designated as Professional Nurse: Specialty with a PN-B1 grading under the Occupational Specific Dispensation. These are not full-time posts; rather, each nurse is appointed for a maximum of twenty sessions per week, with one session equating to one hour. The vacancies are available at a defined set of hospitals across the province, including Pietersburg, Mankweng, Letaba, St Ritas, Philadelphia, Tshilidzini and Mokopane hospitals. Successful candidates will be placed on the departmental sessional database and will be expected to be flexible when their services are required. The opportunity covers a wide range of specialty disciplines, including operational theatre nursing, adult critical care in intensive care units, child nursing and child critical care, trauma nursing, advanced midwifery and neonatal nursing science, ophthalmology, orthopaedics and renal nursing. In addition to these specialty posts, the same advertisement also lists sessional appointments for Professional Nurses with Midwifery at Grade 1 to Grade 3 across numerous hospitals in the Vhembe, Waterberg, Capricorn and Mopani districts, also limited to twenty sessions per week.
Applicants for the specialty posts must hold the minimum R425 qualification, namely a diploma or degree in nursing, or an equivalent qualification that permits registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse. In addition, a post-basic nursing qualification in one of the listed specialty areas is required, with a minimum duration of one year and accredited by the South African Nursing Council in the relevant specialty; an exception applies specifically to Neonatal ICU nursing. Current registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse in the appropriate specialty is essential. For entry at Grade 1, a candidate needs at least four years of appropriate, recognisable nursing experience after registration in General Nursing. For Grade 2, a minimum of fourteen years of such experience is required, and at least ten of those years must have been gained in the relevant specialty after completing the post-basic qualification. All candidates must be willing to work shifts, flexi hours, weekends, public holidays and overtime as needed.
The role calls for solid knowledge of nursing care processes and procedures within the specialty, as well as good communication, report writing, facilitation, liaison, networking and problem-solving abilities. Information management skills and computer literacy are also expected. In terms of duties, the incumbent will provide direction and supervision in the implementation of the nursing care plan so that patients receive quality care. The nurse must practise in line with the applicable standards, quality indicators, legislation and regulations governing nursing and healthcare. Collaboration with a multidisciplinary clinical team is central, as is the efficient and effective use of human, material and physical resources. Sessional remuneration is set according to the approved Department of Public Service and Administration sessional rates, based on appropriate recognisable experience after registration with the South African Nursing Council, and the posts are graded as either Grade 1 or Grade 2 depending on experience. The advertisement provides a separate application link for each specialty and hospital, reflecting the structured nature of this sessional recruitment drive within Limpopo’s public health system.
