The Limpopo Department of Health is accepting sessional appointments for professional nurses across multiple hospitals in the Capricorn, Mopani, Sekhukhune, Vhembe and Waterberg districts. These are part-time posts, structured as a maximum of twenty one-hour sessions per week per professional nurse. The first category, Professional Nurse: Specialty PN-B1 Grade 1–2, is open to nurses with a recognised post-basic qualification in a range of specialty disciplines, including operational theatre, adult critical care (ICU), child nursing and paediatrics, child critical care (paediatric ICU), trauma, advanced midwifery and neonatal nursing science, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, and renal nursing. The second category, Professional Nurse with Midwifery Grade 1–3, is being recruited separately at a broader set of hospitals in the Vhembe, Waterberg, Capricorn and Mopani districts, covering general and specialised facilities.

Applicants for the specialty posts must hold the minimum R425 qualification — a diploma or degree in nursing, or an equivalent qualification that permits registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse. They must also have completed a post-basic nursing qualification in one of the named specialty areas, of at least one year in duration and accredited by the SANC, with a specific exception noted for neonatal ICU nursing. Current registration with the SANC as a Professional Nurse in the relevant specialty is compulsory. For Grade 1 appointment, a minimum of four years of appropriate, recognisable experience in nursing after registration as a Professional Nurse in general nursing is required. For Grade 2, candidates need fourteen years of relevant experience, of which ten must be in the stated specialty after obtaining the post-basic qualification. The midwifery category carries a Grade 1 to Grade 3 structure, with sessional remuneration determined by appropriately recognised experience following SANC registration.

The roles involve providing direction and supervision for the implementation of nursing care plans, ensuring quality patient care, and practising in accordance with professional standards, quality indicators, legislation and regulations. Sessional nurses must work collaboratively within multidisciplinary clinical teams and make efficient and effective use of human, material and physical resources. The work requires sound knowledge and skill in nursing care processes and procedures specific to the relevant specialty, along with good communication, report writing, facilitation, liaison, networking and problem-solving skills. Information management and computer literacy are also necessary. Because these are sessional posts, appointees must be willing to work shifts, flexi-hours, weekends, public holidays and overtime when required.

These appointments are being made to a sessional professional nurses database, and candidates should note that there are dedicated application links for each district hospital and specialty discipline. Remuneration follows approved sessional rates based on experience after registration, as determined by the relevant public service guidelines. This is a flexible, part-time opportunity for qualified specialist and midwifery nurses to contribute to public healthcare across Limpopo, helping the department maintain essential nursing services in surgical, critical care, maternal and child health, trauma and other specialty areas.
