This sessional appointment opportunity with the Limpopo Department of Health is open to professional nurses who hold a recognised specialty qualification and wish to work on a flexible, hourly basis at public hospitals across the province. The posts are graded as Professional Nurse: Specialty (PN-B1) at either Grade 1 or Grade 2, and each appointee may be contracted for a maximum of twenty one-hour sessions per week. Vacancies are available in the Capricorn, Mopani, Sekhukhune, Vhembe and Waterberg districts, with specific hospitals including Pietersburg, Mankweng, Letaba, St Ritas, Philadelphia, Tshilidzini and Mokopane. The specialty disciplines in demand are operational theatre, adult critical care, child nursing, paediatric intensive care, trauma, advanced midwifery and neonatal nursing science, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, renal and paediatric child nursing.
To qualify for the specialty posts, candidates must have a basic R425 diploma or degree in nursing, or an equivalent qualification that permits registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse. A post-basic nursing qualification in one of the listed specialties is also required, with a minimum duration of one year and accredited by the SANC, except in the case of neonatal ICU nursing. Current registration with the SANC in the relevant specialty is essential. For appointment at Grade 1, a minimum of four years of appropriate nursing experience after registration as a Professional Nurse in general nursing is required. For Grade 2, candidates need at least fourteen years of experience, of which ten years must be in the relevant specialty after obtaining the post-basic qualification. A willingness to work shifts, flexi-hours, weekends, public holidays and overtime is a key requirement.
The main responsibilities include providing direction and supervision for the implementation of the nursing care plan, ensuring quality patient care, practising nursing in line with legislation and professional standards, collaborating within a multidisciplinary clinical team, and using human, material and physical resources efficiently. The ideal candidate will have strong knowledge of nursing care processes, excellent communication and report-writing skills, facilitation and liaison abilities, problem-solving skills, information management skills and computer literacy.
Remuneration is sessional, based on appropriate and recognisable experience after registration with the SANC, and determined by the sessional rates approved by the Department of Public Service and Administration. The notice also includes sessional appointments for Professional Nurse with Midwifery at a broader range of hospitals in Vhembe, Waterberg, Capricorn and Mopani districts, with the same maximum of twenty sessions per week and sessional remuneration. These posts are part of the department’s ongoing sessional staffing framework, allowing for flexible service delivery in critical nursing areas.
