This opportunity is for sessional professional nurse appointments within the Limpopo Department of Health, covering public hospitals across the Capricorn, Mopani, Sekhukhune, Vhembe and Waterberg districts. The first stream is for Professional Nurse: Specialty at PN-B1 Grade 1 or Grade 2 level, with a maximum of 20 sessions per week per nurse, each session lasting one hour. Specialty disciplines include Operational Theatre, Critical Care Adult (ICU), Child Nursing (Paediatrics), Child Critical Care Nursing (ICU), Trauma, Advanced Midwifery and Neonatal Nursing Science, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics, and Renal. These posts are available at hospitals such as Pietersburg, Mankweng, Letaba, St Ritas, Philadelphia, Tshilidzini and Mokopane, and sessional remuneration is determined according to the approved DPSA sessional rates, based on appropriate and recognisable experience after registration with the South African Nursing Council.
To qualify for the specialty post, applicants must hold a minimum basic R425 qualification, namely a Diploma or Degree in Nursing or an equivalent qualification that allows registration as a Professional Nurse with the South African Nursing Council. In addition, a post-basic nursing qualification in one of the listed specialty areas, with a minimum duration of one year and accredited by the SANC, is required, except for Neonatal ICU nursing. Current registration with the SANC in the relevant specialty is also essential. For appointment at Grade 1, a minimum of four years of appropriate or recognisable nursing experience after registration as a Professional Nurse in General Nursing is required. Grade 2 requires a minimum of fourteen years of such experience, of which ten years must be in the relevant specialty after obtaining the post-basic qualification. Inherent requirements include a willingness to work shifts, flexi-hours, weekends, public holidays and overtime as needed.
The key performance areas for the specialty role include providing direction and supervision for the implementation of the nursing care plan and ensuring quality patient care, practising nursing and healthcare in line with standards, quality indicators, legislation and regulations, working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary clinical team, and utilising human, material and physical resources efficiently and effectively. Candidates should also possess sound knowledge and skills in nursing care processes and procedures relevant to their specialty, along with good communication, report writing, facilitation, liaison, networking and problem-solving abilities, as well as information management skills and computer literacy.
The second stream is for Professional Nurse with Midwifery, graded at levels 1 to 3, also on a sessional appointment basis with a maximum of 20 sessions per week per nurse and one hour per session. This opportunity covers a broader list of hospitals in the same districts, including Elim, Siloam, Donald Frazer, Malamulele, Messina, Louis Trichardt, Hayani, Ellisras, Witpoort, Warmbaths, FH Odendaal / MDR TB, George Masebe, Thabazimbi, Voortrekker, Mokopane, Helene Franz, Seshego, WF Knobel, Botlokwa, Lebowakgomo, Zebediela, Pietersburg-Mankweng Complex, Thabamoopo, Nkhensani, Dr CN Phatudi, Maphutha L Malatjie, Kgapane, Sekororo, Van Velden, Letaba and Evuxakeni hospitals. The sessional remuneration for midwifery appointments follows the same approved sessional rate structure based on experience and SANC registration.
Applicants for both streams are being considered for placement on a sessional professional nurse database, from which hospitals will make appointments according to service needs. These are sessional, non-permanent posts, and the conditions of service are specific to sessional employment within the public health sector.
