This is a sessional appointment for Professional Nurses with a specialty qualification, graded at PN-B1 Level Grade 1 or Grade 2, within the Limpopo Department of Health. The role involves working on an hourly basis, with a maximum of 20 sessions per week, where one session equals one hour. Successful candidates will be placed at various regional and district hospitals across Limpopo, including facilities in Capricorn, Mopani, Sekhukhune, Vhembe, and Waterberg districts. The specialty disciplines open for these posts include Operational Theatre, Critical Care Adult (ICU), Child Nursing (Paediatrics), Child Critical Care Nursing (ICU), Trauma, Advanced Midwifery and Neonatal Nursing Science, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics, Renal, and Paediatric/Child Nursing. These are database appointments, meaning selected nurses will be registered on a sessional professional nurses database and called upon as needed to provide specialist nursing services at the designated institutions.

To qualify, candidates must hold a minimum basic R425 qualification, such as a Diploma or Degree in Nursing, or an equivalent qualification that allows registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Professional Nurse. In addition, a post-basic nursing qualification in one of the listed specialty areas is required, with a minimum duration of one year, accredited by SANC in the relevant discipline, except for Neonatal ICU nursing. Current registration with SANC as a Professional Nurse in the appropriate specialty is mandatory. For appointment at Grade 1, applicants need at least four years of appropriate or recognisable nursing experience after registration as a Professional Nurse with SANC in General Nursing. For Grade 2, a minimum of fourteen years of appropriate or recognisable nursing experience after registration in General Nursing is required, of which ten years must be relevant experience in the specialty after obtaining the post-basic qualification. Candidates must also be willing to work shifts, flexi-hours, weekends, public holidays, and overtime when necessary.

The role demands strong knowledge and skills in nursing care processes and procedures within the relevant specialty area. Good communication, report writing, facilitation, liaison, networking, and problem-solving abilities are essential, as is information management and computer literacy. The key performance areas include providing direction and supervision for the implementation of nursing care plans and ensuring quality patient care. Nurses will practice nursing and healthcare in accordance with professional standards, quality indicators, legislation, and regulations relevant to nursing. They will work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary clinical team and must utilise human, material, and physical resources efficiently and effectively. Sessional remuneration is based on recognised experience after registration with SANC, as determined by the sessional rates approved by the DPSA, meaning that pay will reflect the nurse’s grade and years of relevant experience. This is an opportunity for specialist nurses to contribute their expertise to public healthcare facilities on a flexible, sessional basis while supporting service delivery across the province.
