The Limpopo Department of Health is offering sessional appointments for Professional Nurses with a specialty qualification, designated as PN-B1 Grade 1 and Grade 2, across multiple hospitals in the Capricorn, Mopani, Sekhukhune, Vhembe, and Waterberg districts. These are part-time or sessional posts, with a maximum of twenty one-hour sessions per week per nurse. The roles are open to nurses specialising in areas such as Operating Theatre, Critical Care Adult (ICU), Child Nursing (Paediatrics), Child Critical Care Nursing, Trauma, Advanced Midwifery and Neonatal Nursing Science, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics, and Renal nursing. In addition, a parallel recruitment drive is underway for Professional Nurses with Midwifery qualifications at Grade 1 to Grade 3, also on a sessional basis, serving a wider list of hospitals in the same districts. This reflects the department’s effort to bolster specialised nursing capacity across its hospital network.

To be considered, candidates must hold a minimum basic R425 qualification, meaning a diploma or degree in nursing that allows registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse. In addition, a post-basic nursing qualification in one of the listed specialty areas, accredited by the SANC and lasting at least one year, is required, except for Neonatal ICU nursing where a different arrangement may apply. Current registration with the SANC as a Professional Nurse in the relevant specialty is essential. For entry at Grade 1, applicants need at least four years of appropriate nursing experience after registration in general nursing. For Grade 2, a minimum of fourteen years of post-registration experience is required, including ten years specifically in the relevant specialty after obtaining the post-basic qualification. The department also expects a willingness to work shifts, flexi-hours, weekends, public holidays, and overtime as needed.

The core duties involve providing direction and supervision in implementing the nursing care plan and ensuring quality patient care. Nurses will practice in line with professional standards, quality indicators, legislation, and regulations. They must work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary clinical team and use human, material, and physical resources efficiently. The ideal candidate will have strong knowledge of nursing care processes in their specialty, good communication and report-writing skills, facilitation and liaison abilities, networking and problem-solving skills, information management skills, and computer literacy.

Remuneration is sessional and based on appropriate experience after registration with the SANC, using sessional rates approved by the Department of Public Service and Administration. These are sessional appointments, meaning work is offered in hourly sessions up to a maximum of twenty per week. The department is building a database of sessional professional nurses, and candidates apply through the specific application links provided for each hospital and specialty. Given the scope of the roles, these opportunities are ideal for specialised nurses seeking flexible, supplementary work within the public health sector while contributing to critical care and specialised services in Limpopo’s hospitals.
