This is a sessional appointment opportunity for experienced specialist nurses within the Limpopo Department of Health, offering professional nurses the chance to work on a flexible, hourly-session basis across multiple district hospitals. The positions are graded as Professional Nurse: Specialty (PN-B1) Grade 1–2, and are part of a professional nurses database for sessional appointments, meaning that selected candidates may be called upon as needed, up to a maximum of twenty sessions per week, with each session equivalent to one hour. The posts are available at hospitals in the Capricorn, Mopani, Sekhukhune, Vhembe, and Waterberg districts, with specialty disciplines spanning Operational Theatre, Critical Care Adult (ICU), Child Nursing (Paediatrics), Child Critical Care Nursing (ICU), Trauma, Advanced Midwifery and Neonatal Nursing Science, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics, and Renal nursing. The role exists to ensure that these hospitals have access to highly specialised nursing skills when required, supporting the delivery of quality patient care across a range of clinical settings.
To be considered, applicants must hold a minimum basic R425 qualification, such as a Diploma or Degree in Nursing or an equivalent qualification that allows registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Professional Nurse. In addition, a post-basic nursing qualification in one of the listed specialty areas is required, with a minimum duration of one year accredited by the SANC in the relevant specialty, except for Neonatal ICU nursing. Current registration with SANC as a Professional Nurse in the appropriate specialty is essential. Experience requirements depend on the grade being applied for: Grade 1 requires a minimum of four years appropriate and recognizable nursing experience after registration as a Professional Nurse in General Nursing, while Grade 2 requires fourteen years of such experience, of which ten years must be in the relevant specialty after obtaining the post-basic qualification.
The successful candidate will be responsible for providing direction and supervision in the implementation of the nursing care plan, ensuring quality patient care is delivered, and practicing nursing in line with standards, quality indicators, legislation, and regulations. The role involves working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary clinical team, as well as utilizing human, material, and physical resources efficiently and effectively. Strong knowledge of nursing care processes and procedures in the relevant specialty area is essential, along with good communication, report writing, facilitation, liaison, networking, and problem-solving skills. Information management skills and computer literacy are also required, as nurses will need to document and manage patient information effectively.
These are sessional appointments, so candidates must be willing to work shifts, flexi-hours, weekends, public holidays, and overtime when required. Remuneration is based on the approved sessional rates determined by the Department of Public Service and Administration, with the specific rate dependent on the grade and the candidate’s appropriate, recognizable experience after registration with SANC. The advertisement also includes a separate category for Professional Nurse with Midwifery Grade 1–3 sessional appointments at numerous hospitals in the Vhembe, Waterberg, Capricorn, and Mopani districts, which follows a similar sessional arrangement but focuses on midwifery practice. Applicants interested in either stream should ensure they meet the specific requirements for their chosen specialty and grade, and must be prepared to work in the public health sector where patient needs are diverse and demanding.
