This is a sessional professional nurse specialty post within the Limpopo Department of Health, offering grade 1 and grade 2 appointments on a session basis, with up to twenty one-hour sessions per week per nurse. The role is available at multiple hospitals across the Capricorn, Mopani, Sekhukhune, Vhembe, and Waterberg districts, including facilities such as Pietersburg, Mankweng, Letaba, St Ritas, Philadelphia, Tshilidzini, and Mokopane hospitals. Specialty disciplines covered include operating theatre, adult critical care, child nursing, child critical care, trauma, advanced midwifery and neonatal nursing science, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, and renal nursing. A parallel sessional appointment exists for professional nurses with midwifery, graded from one to three, with placements at numerous hospitals in the Vhembe, Waterberg, Capricorn, and Mopani districts.
To be considered for the specialty posts, candidates must hold a basic R425 nursing diploma or degree, or an equivalent qualification that allows registration with the South African Nursing Council as a professional nurse. In addition, a post-basic nursing qualification in one of the listed specialties, accredited by the SANC and lasting at least one year, is required, except for neonatal ICU nursing. Current registration with the SANC in the relevant specialty is essential. For grade 1, applicants need a minimum of four years of appropriate nursing experience after registration in general nursing. For grade 2, at least fourteen years of appropriate experience is required, including ten years in the relevant specialty after obtaining the post-basic qualification. Candidates must also be willing to work shifts, flexi-hours, weekends, public holidays, and overtime as needed.
The key performance areas include providing direction and supervision for the implementation of nursing care plans and quality patient care, practising nursing in line with standards and regulations, collaborating within a multidisciplinary clinical team, and using human, material, and physical resources efficiently and effectively. Desirable knowledge and skills include a solid understanding of nursing care processes in the relevant specialty area, good communication and report-writing abilities, facilitation, liaison, networking, problem-solving, information management, and computer literacy.
Remuneration is sessional and based on recognised experience after registration with the SANC, as determined by the Department of Public Service and Administration. These are sessional appointments, meaning work is offered in hourly sessions, with a maximum of twenty sessions per week per professional nurse. This structure provides flexibility for both the health facilities and the nurses, while allowing the department to address specialist staffing needs across the province. Applicants should ensure they meet the inherent requirements for the relevant grade and specialty before applying, as appointments are made according to the specific needs of each hospital and unit. The midwifery posts follow a similar sessional model, though the detailed requirements for that stream are not itemised in the same way; interested candidates should expect comparable registration and experience expectations. This is an opportunity for experienced specialist nurses to contribute to public healthcare delivery on a part-time basis across a wide geographic area.
