The vacancy offers sessional appointments for Professional Nurses with a specialty, graded as PN-B1 Grades 1 and 2, as well as Professional Nurses with Midwifery at Grades 1 through 3. Each appointment is based on a maximum of twenty one-hour sessions per week, making this a flexible, part-time arrangement suited to specialists who want to contribute their skills across multiple public health facilities. The posts are located in hospitals across the Capricorn, Mopani, Sekhukhune, Vhembe and Waterberg districts, giving successful applicants the opportunity to work in a range of clinical settings while remaining within the Limpopo provincial health system.
For the specialty posts, the department is specifically seeking nurses qualified in operational theatre nursing, critical care adult ICU, child nursing or paediatrics, child critical care nursing, trauma, advanced midwifery and neonatal nursing science, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, and renal nursing. The specialty centres include Pietersburg, Mankweng, Letaba, St Ritas, Philadelphia, Tshilidzini and Mokopane hospitals. For the midwifery posts, a wider range of hospitals across the Vhembe, Waterberg, Capricorn and Mopani districts is available, including Elim, Siloam, Tshilidzini, Ellisras, Warmbaths, Mokopane, Helene Franz, Seshego, Lebowakgomo, the Pietersburg-Mankweng Complex, Nkhensani, Dr CN Phatudi, Kgapane and Letaba hospitals, among others.
Candidates must hold a basic R425 qualification, namely a diploma or degree in nursing that permits registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse. In addition, specialty applicants must possess a post-basic nursing qualification in one of the stated specialty disciplines, with a minimum duration of one year, accredited by the SANC; the exception is neonatal ICU nursing, which has a different requirement. Current registration with the SANC in the relevant specialty is essential. For entry at Grade 1, a minimum of four years of appropriate or recognisable nursing experience after registration as a Professional Nurse in general nursing is required. For Grade 2, candidates need at least fourteen years of nursing experience, of which ten years must be in the relevant specialty after obtaining the post-basic qualification. Midwifery applicants are expected to hold the relevant midwifery qualification and maintain SANC registration, with grading determined by their level of experience.
The key performance areas for these roles include providing direction and supervision for the implementation of nursing care plans and ensuring quality patient care. Nurses must practise within the framework of applicable legislation, regulations and quality standards, work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary clinical team, and use human, material and physical resources efficiently and effectively. Strong clinical knowledge of nursing care processes in the relevant specialty is crucial, along with good communication, report writing, facilitation, liaison, networking and problem-solving skills. Information management skills and computer literacy are also required.
Applicants should note that these are sessional appointments, and willingness to work shifts, flexi-hours, weekends, public holidays and overtime when required is an inherent requirement of the post. Remuneration is based on recognisable experience after registration with the SANC, as determined by the sessional rates approved by the DPSA. Successful candidates will be placed on the professional nurses database for sessional appointments and allocated to the specific hospitals and specialty disciplines for which they applied, with each discipline having its own dedicated application route per hospital.
