This vacancy offers sessional appointments for professional nurses who hold a specialty qualification, working within the Limpopo Department of Health across several district hospitals. The posts are graded at PN-B1 Grade 1 and Grade 2 levels, and are open to nurses registered with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) in one of the recognised specialty disciplines, including operating theatre, critical care adult ICU, child nursing and paediatrics, child critical care ICU, trauma, advanced midwifery and neonatal nursing science, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, renal, and paediatric or child nursing. In addition to these specialty posts, the department is also recruiting professional nurses with midwifery qualifications for sessional appointments at a broader list of hospitals in the Vhembe, Waterberg, Capricorn and Mopani districts. All appointments are sessional in nature, meaning work is structured around hourly sessions rather than full-time employment, with remuneration determined by approved sessional rates and the nurse’s recognisable experience after SANC registration.

Applicants must hold at least a basic R425 qualification, such as a diploma or degree in nursing, or an equivalent qualification that permits registration as a professional nurse with SANC. A post-basic nursing qualification in one of the listed specialty areas is also required, with a minimum duration of one year and accredited by SANC in the relevant specialty; the exception is neonatal ICU nursing, which has its own specific requirements. Current registration with SANC as a professional nurse in the appropriate specialty is essential. For appointment at Grade 1, a minimum of four years of appropriate and recognisable nursing experience after registration as a professional nurse with SANC in general nursing is required. For Grade 2, the requirement is a minimum of fourteen years of appropriate experience after registration, of which at least ten years must be in the relevant specialty after obtaining the post-basic qualification. Candidates must also be willing to work shifts, flexi-hours, weekends, public holidays and overtime when required.

The role demands solid knowledge and skills in nursing care processes and procedures within the relevant specialty area, along with good communication, report writing, facilitation, liaison, networking and problem-solving abilities. Information management skills and computer literacy are also required. The key performance areas include providing direction and supervision for the implementation of the nursing care plan and ensuring quality patient care; practising nursing and healthcare in line with standards, quality indicators, legislation and regulations; working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary clinical team; and using human, material and physical resources efficiently and effectively.

These sessional posts are part of a provincial professional nurses database for sessional appointments, and interested nurses should note that the work is based at specific hospitals in the Capricorn, Mopani, Sekhukhune, Vhembe and Waterberg districts. The remuneration is set according to sessional rates approved by the Department of Public Service and Administration, and is linked to the nurse’s level of recognisable experience after SANC registration. Because these are sessional appointments, they offer flexibility but also require a commitment to the operational needs of the hospitals, including after-hours and public holiday coverage. The midwifery sessional appointments are similarly structured, with grade levels from 1 to 3, and cover a wider range of hospitals across the same districts. Applicants should ensure they meet the relevant SANC registration and experience criteria for the specific grade and specialty before applying.
