The health department advertising these posts is building a sessional database for professional nurses, offering flexible, hourly-based appointments across a range of public hospitals. The positions are available in two streams: specialty nursing posts at PN-B1 Grade 1 and Grade 2 level, and professional nurse with midwifery posts at Grade 1 to Grade 3 level. Sessional appointments are capped at a maximum of 20 sessions per week, with each session count as one hour, making this a part-time or supplementary working arrangement suited to nurses who cannot commit to full-time shifts. The specialty posts are based at selected hospitals in the Capricorn, Mopani, Sekhukhune, Vhembe and Waterberg districts, including Pietersburg, Mankweng, Letaba, St Ritas, Philadelphia, Tshilidzini and Mokopane hospitals. Specialty disciplines sought include operational theatre, adult critical care, child nursing, child critical care, trauma, advanced midwifery and neonatal nursing science, ophthalmology, orthopaedics and renal nursing.
Applicants for the specialty posts must hold a basic R425 qualification in nursing, such as a diploma or degree, that allows registration with the South African Nursing Council as a professional nurse. In addition, a post-basic nursing qualification in one of the listed specialty areas, accredited by the SANC and of at least one year’s duration, is required. Current registration with the SANC in the relevant specialty is essential. For appointment at Grade 1, candidates need a minimum of four years’ appropriate nursing experience after registration in general nursing. For Grade 2, a minimum of fourteen years’ experience is required, of which ten years must be in the relevant specialty after obtaining the post-basic qualification. There is an exception for neonatal ICU nursing regarding the one-year post-basic qualification requirement. All candidates must be willing to work shifts, flexi-hours, weekends, public holidays and overtime when required. The role also demands sound knowledge of nursing care processes, strong communication and report writing abilities, facilitation and liaison skills, networking and problem-solving capacity, information management skills and computer literacy.
The core duties of the specialty nurse include providing direction and supervision in the implementation of the nursing care plan and ensuring quality patient care. Practitioners must practice nursing and healthcare in accordance with professional standards, quality indicators, legislation and regulations relevant to nursing and healthcare. They will work collaboratively within multidisciplinary clinical teams and must utilise human, material and physical resources efficiently and effectively.
In addition to the specialty roles, the department is recruiting professional nurses with midwifery qualifications for sessional appointments at a broader list of hospitals in Vhembe, Waterberg, Capricorn and Mopani districts. Institutions include Elim, Siloam, Donald Frazer, Malamulele, Messina, Louis Trichardt, Tshilidzini, Hayani, Ellisras, Witpoort, Warmbaths, FH Odendaal, George Masebe, Thabazimbi, Voortrekker, Mokopane, Helene Franz, Seshego, WF Knobel, Botlokwa, Lebowakgomo, Zebediela, Pietersburg-Mankweng Complex, Thabamoopo, Nkhensani, Dr CN Phatudi, Maphutha L Malatjie, Kgapane, Sekororo, Van Velden, Letaba and Evuxakeni hospitals. Sessional remuneration for both streams is calculated using approved sessional rates and the applicant’s recognisable experience after registration with the South African Nursing Council, with the rate differing by grade. These sessional posts form part of a professional nurses database, meaning successful applicants may be called upon to work as needs arise. Candidates should be prepared for flexible scheduling, including after-hours and public holiday work. The application process uses specific links for each specialty and hospital, and the closing date and submission instructions are provided alongside this summary.
