This sessional appointment offers registered professional nurses with a recognised specialty qualification the opportunity to work on an hourly basis within the Limpopo Department of Health, contributing to specialised nursing care across multiple hospitals. The role is formally graded as Professional Nurse Specialty, PN-B1, at Grade 1 or Grade 2, and each appointment is limited to a maximum of twenty sessions per week, with one session equating to one hour. Successful candidates will be placed within one of the participating hospitals in the Capricorn, Mopani, Sekhukhune, Vhembe, or Waterberg districts, and will be expected to practise in a specific specialty discipline such as operational theatre nursing, adult critical care, child nursing, paediatric critical care, trauma, advanced midwifery and neonatal nursing science, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, or renal nursing.
Applicants must hold a basic R425 qualification, namely a diploma or degree in nursing or an equivalent qualification that permits registration with the South African Nursing Council as a professional nurse. In addition, a post-basic nursing qualification in one of the listed specialty areas is required, with a minimum duration of one year and accreditation by the SANC, except in the case of neonatal ICU nursing. Current registration with the SANC as a professional nurse in the relevant specialty is essential. For appointment at Grade 1, candidates need at least four years of appropriate and recognisable nursing experience after registration in general nursing. For Grade 2, a minimum of fourteen years of such experience is required, of which ten years must be in the relevant specialty after obtaining the post-basic qualification.
The role demands a solid command of nursing care processes and procedures within the chosen specialty, as well as good communication, report writing, facilitation, liaison, networking, and problem-solving skills. Information management skills and computer literacy are also necessary. The key performance areas include providing direction and supervision for the implementation of nursing care plans, ensuring quality patient care, practising nursing and healthcare in line with relevant standards, quality indicators, legislation, and regulations, working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary clinical team, and using human, material, and physical resources efficiently and effectively.
Because these are sessional appointments, flexibility is important. Candidates must be willing to work shifts, flexi-hours, weekends, public holidays, and overtime when required. Remuneration is sessional and determined according to the appropriate and recognisable experience after registration with the SANC, using the sessional rates approved by the Department of Public Service and Administration. The positions form part of a broader professional nurses database for sessional appointments, and applicants are expected to apply through the specific online application links provided for each hospital and specialty discipline. This is an excellent opportunity for experienced specialist nurses to contribute to public healthcare in Limpopo on a flexible, session-based schedule while maintaining professional registration and advancing their clinical expertise.
