The Limpopo Department of Health is offering sessional appointment opportunities for professional nurses with specialist qualifications, working on an hourly basis at public hospitals across the province. The main vacancy is for a Professional Nurse: Specialty, graded at PN-B1 Grade 1 or Grade 2, with a maximum of twenty one-hour sessions per week per nurse. The same advertisement also covers a parallel sessional post for Professional Nurse with Midwifery, graded from Grade 1 to Grade 3, at a broader network of hospitals. These positions are part of a professional nurses database for sessional appointments, allowing the department to draw on qualified nurses flexibly as service needs arise.
The specialty posts are based at Pietersburg Hospital and Mankweng Hospital in Capricorn District, Letaba Hospital in Mopani District, St Ritas Hospital and Philadelphia Hospital in Sekhukhune District, Tshilidzini Hospital in Vhembe District, and Mokopane Hospital in Waterberg District. Specialty disciplines open for application include operational theatre nursing, adult critical care, child nursing, child critical care, trauma nursing, advanced midwifery and neonatal nursing science, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, renal nursing, and paediatric or child nursing. The midwifery sessional posts are available at numerous hospitals in Vhembe, Waterberg, Capricorn, and Mopani districts, including Elim, Siloam, Donald Frazer, Malamulele, Messina, Louis Trichardt, Hayani, Ellisras, Witpoort, Warmbaths, FH Odendaal, George Masebe, Thabazimbi, Voortrekker, Mokopane, Helene Franz, Seshego, WF Knobel, Botlokwa, Lebowakgomo, Zebediela, Pietersburg-Mankweng Complex, Thabamoopo, Nkhensani, Dr CN Phatudi, Maphutha L Malatjie, Kgapane, Sekororo, Van Velden, Letaba, and Evuxakeni hospitals.
To be considered, candidates must hold a minimum basic R425 qualification, namely a diploma or degree in nursing or an equivalent qualification that allows registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse. For the specialty posts, a post-basic nursing qualification in one of the listed specialty areas is required, with a minimum duration of one year and accreditation with the South African Nursing Council in the relevant specialty, except for neonatal ICU nursing. Current registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse in the appropriate specialty is essential. Grade 1 applicants need at least four years of appropriate or recognisable nursing experience after registration as a Professional Nurse in general nursing. Grade 2 applicants need at least fourteen years of such experience, of which ten years must be appropriate experience in the relevant specialty after obtaining the post-basic qualification. The midwifery posts follow a similar structure, with grading from Grade 1 to Grade 3 based on recognised experience after registration.
The role requires sound knowledge and skills in nursing care processes and procedures within the relevant specialty area, as well as good communication, report writing, facilitation, liaison, networking, and problem-solving abilities. Information management skills and computer literacy are also expected. Key performance areas include providing direction and supervision for the implementation of the nursing care plan and quality patient care, practising nursing and healthcare in accordance with standards, quality indicators, legislation, and regulations, working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary clinical team, and utilising human, material, and physical resources efficiently and effectively.
These are sessional appointments, meaning work is remunerated on an hourly basis according to sessional rates approved by the Department of Public Service and Administration, with the rate determined by appropriate and recognisable experience after registration with the South African Nursing Council. Nurses must be willing to work shifts, flexi-hours, weekends, public holidays, and overtime when required. Each hospital and specialty discipline has its own dedicated application link, so applicants should apply specifically for the post and location that matches their qualifications. This is an excellent opportunity for qualified specialist and midwifery nurses to contribute to public healthcare delivery in Limpopo on a flexible, sessional basis while being part of a provincial database for future temporary staffing needs.
