This position offers registered professional nurses with a recognised specialty qualification the opportunity to work on a sessional basis within public hospitals across the Limpopo province. Appointed as a Professional Nurse Specialty at Grade 1 or Grade 2 level, the successful candidate will be part of a sessional pool, providing services for a specified number of hourly sessions per week. The role is based at various hospitals in the Capricorn, Mopani, Sekhukhune, Vhembe and Waterberg districts, including tertiary and regional facilities such as Pietersburg, Mankweng, Letaba, St Ritas, Philadelphia, Tshilidzini and Mokopane hospitals. Specialty disciplines covered include Operating Theatre, Critical Care Adult, Child Nursing, Child Critical Care, Trauma, Advanced Midwifery and Neonatal Nursing Science, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics and Renal nursing. This is not a permanent post but a sessional appointment, and the department is establishing a database of sessional professional nurses to draw from as needs arise.
To be considered, candidates must hold a minimum basic R425 qualification, namely a diploma or degree in nursing or an equivalent that allows registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse. In addition, a post-basic nursing qualification in one of the recognised specialty areas, with a duration of at least one year and accredited by the SANC, is required, except in the case of Neonatal ICU nursing where a different arrangement may apply. Current registration with the SANC as a Professional Nurse in the relevant specialty is essential. For entry at Grade 1, applicants need at least four years of appropriate nursing experience after registration in general nursing. For Grade 2, a minimum of fourteen years of nursing experience is required, of which ten years must be in the relevant specialty after obtaining the post-basic qualification. Candidates must also be willing to work shifts, flexi-hours, weekends, public holidays and overtime when required.
The core duties involve providing direction and supervision for the implementation of the nursing care plan, ensuring quality patient care, and practising nursing in line with professional standards, quality indicators, legislation and regulations. The nurse will work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary clinical team and must utilise human, material and physical resources efficiently and effectively. Strong knowledge of nursing care processes and procedures in the relevant specialty is essential, along with good communication, report writing, facilitation, liaison, networking and problem-solving skills. Information management skills and computer literacy are also required.
Remuneration is based on the sessional rates approved by the Department of Public Service and Administration, determined by the candidate’s years of appropriate experience after registration with the SANC. This is a valuable opportunity for specialist nurses to contribute to public healthcare delivery on a flexible, sessional basis while earning a competitive hourly rate. Applicants should note that appointments are subject to specific hospital and district needs, and that the sessional nature of the post means work is not guaranteed on a full-time basis.
