This is a sessional professional nurse opportunity within Limpopo’s public hospital sector, offered on a maximum of twenty one-hour sessions per week per professional nurse. The posts are available across multiple hospitals in the Capricorn, Mopani, Sekhukhune, Vhembe and Waterberg districts, and cover two broad appointment streams. The first is for Professional Nurse: Specialty at Grade 1 and Grade 2 level, with specialties including Operational Theatre, Critical Care Adult ICU, Child Nursing and Paediatrics, Child Critical Care ICU, Trauma, Advanced Midwifery and Neonatal Nursing Science, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics, Renal, and Paediatric Child Nursing. The second stream is for Professional Nurse with Midwifery at Grade 1 to Grade 3 level, with sessional posts at a wide range of hospitals across Vhembe, Waterberg, Capricorn and Mopani districts. Both streams are sessional appointments, meaning work is arranged in hourly sessions rather than as a full-time permanent post, and remuneration is paid according to DPSA-approved sessional rates based on the nurse’s recognised experience after registration with the South African Nursing Council.

To be considered for the specialty posts, candidates must hold a basic R425 nursing qualification, either a diploma or degree in nursing, or an equivalent qualification that allows registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse. In addition, a post-basic nursing qualification in one of the listed specialty areas is required, with a minimum duration of one year and accredited by SANC in the relevant specialty, except for the noted neonatal ICU nursing exception. Current registration with SANC as a Professional Nurse in the appropriate specialty is essential. For Grade 1, applicants need at least four years of appropriate and recognisable nursing experience after registration as a Professional Nurse in General Nursing. For Grade 2, applicants need at least fourteen years of such experience, including ten years of appropriate experience in the relevant specialty after obtaining the post-basic qualification. For the midwifery stream, the same broad sessional appointment model applies, with remuneration based on sessional rates.

The core duties involve providing direction and supervision in implementing the nursing care plan and ensuring quality patient care. Nurses must practise in line with relevant legislation, regulations, standards and quality indicators, work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary clinical team, and use human, material and physical resources efficiently. Candidates must also be willing to work shifts, flexi-hours, weekends, public holidays and overtime when required. Strong knowledge of nursing care processes in the relevant specialty, good communication and report-writing skills, facilitation, liaison, networking, problem-solving, information management and computer literacy are all required. These sessional posts are part of a professional nurses database for sessional appointments, allowing hospitals to draw on qualified specialist and midwifery nurses to support service delivery.
