The Limpopo Department of Health is inviting applications from suitably qualified professional nurses for sessional specialty appointments at the PN-B1 Grade 1 and Grade 2 levels. These posts are based at designated public hospitals across the Capricorn, Mopani, Sekhukhune, Vhembe and Waterberg districts, including Pietersburg, Mankweng, Letaba, St Ritas, Philadelphia, Tshilidzini and Mokopane hospitals. The sessional nature of the appointments means that successful candidates will be engaged on an hourly-session basis, with a maximum of twenty sessions per week, where one session equals one hour. Specialty disciplines covered by this advertisement include operational theatre nursing, critical care adult (ICU), child nursing (paediatrics), child critical care nursing (ICU), trauma nursing, advanced midwifery and neonatal nursing science, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, renal nursing, and paediatric or child nursing.

To be considered for these posts, applicants must hold a minimum basic R425 qualification, namely a diploma or degree in nursing or an equivalent qualification that allows registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a professional nurse. In addition, candidates must have completed a post-basic nursing qualification in one of the listed specialty areas, with a minimum duration of one year, accredited by the SANC in the relevant specialty; the only exception is for neonatal ICU nursing. Current registration with the SANC as a professional nurse in the appropriate specialty is also essential. For appointment at Grade 1, a minimum of four years of appropriate or recognisable experience in nursing after registration as a professional nurse with the SANC in general nursing is required. For Grade 2, candidates need at least fourteen years of such experience, of which ten years must be appropriate experience in the relevant specialty after obtaining the post-basic qualification.

The role demands a thorough knowledge of nursing care processes and procedures within the chosen specialty, as well as good communication, report writing, facilitation, liaison, networking and problem-solving skills. Information management skills and computer literacy are also required. The key performance areas include providing direction and supervision for the implementation of the nursing care plan and ensuring quality patient care. The nurse will practise nursing and healthcare in accordance with relevant standards, quality indicators, legislation and regulations, and will work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary clinical team. Efficient and effective utilisation of human, material and physical resources is a core responsibility. Candidates must be willing to work shifts, flexi-hours, weekends, public holidays and overtime when required.

The advertisement also includes a separate sessional appointment for professional nurses with midwifery qualifications, at Grade 1 to Grade 3, across numerous hospitals in the same districts, including Elim, Siloam, Ellisras, Warmbaths, Helene Franz, Seshego, Nkhensani and many others. These posts follow the same sessional framework, with a maximum of twenty sessions per week. Remuneration for both categories is sessional and will be based on appropriate and recognisable experience after registration with the SANC, as determined by the sessional rates approved by the Department of Public Service and Administration. The department is building a database of sessional professional nurses, and applicants should note the special conditions attached to these appointments, including the requirement to work outside normal hours and the need to indicate their preferred specialty and hospital when applying. These opportunities are ideal for experienced specialist nurses seeking flexible, hourly-based work within the provincial public health sector.
