This opportunity is for professional nurses seeking sessional work within Limpopo’s public health sector, specifically in specialty nursing and midwifery. The Limpopo Department of Health is accepting sessional appointments for professional nurses at multiple hospitals across the Capricorn, Mopani, Sekhukhune, Vhembe, and Waterberg districts. These are not permanent posts but sessional appointments, with each session lasting one hour and a maximum of twenty sessions per week per nurse. This structure offers flexibility while allowing hospitals to cover critical nursing functions in operating theatres, intensive care units, paediatric wards, trauma units, and other specialised areas.

For the specialty nurse positions, classified as Professional Nurse: Specialty PN-B1 Grade 1 and Grade 2, candidates must hold a basic R425 nursing diploma or degree, or an equivalent qualification that permits registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse. In addition, a post-basic qualification in one of the recognised specialty disciplines is required, including operational theatre, critical care adult, child nursing, child critical care, trauma, advanced midwifery and neonatal nursing science, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, or renal nursing. The post-basic course must be at least one year and accredited by the SANC, except for neonatal ICU nursing. Current registration with the SANC in the relevant specialty is essential. Experience requirements differ by grade: Grade 1 requires a minimum of four years of appropriate nursing experience after registration, while Grade 2 requires fourteen years of experience, of which ten must be in the relevant specialty after obtaining the post-basic qualification.

The midwifery sessional appointments, open at Grade 1 to Grade 3, are available at a wide range of hospitals in Vhembe, Waterberg, Capricorn, and Mopani districts. These roles focus on maternal and neonatal care, and while the specific requirements are not itemised in the same way, they follow the same sessional framework and require registration as a professional nurse with midwifery.

Core duties for these sessional nurses include providing direction and supervision in implementing nursing care plans, ensuring quality patient care, and practising in line with professional standards, legislation, and regulations. Nurses will work collaboratively within multidisciplinary clinical teams and must use human, material, and physical resources efficiently. Strong skills in communication, report writing, facilitation, liaison, networking, problem-solving, information management, and computer literacy are essential. A willingness to work shifts, flexi-hours, weekends, public holidays, and overtime is required.

Remuneration is based on the nurse’s recognisable experience after registration with the SANC, using sessional rates approved by the Department of Public Service and Administration. These sessional appointments are an important way for the department to maintain specialised nursing capacity across the province.
