This sessional appointment offers qualified professional nurses the opportunity to work as specialists within public hospitals across Limpopo, under the provincial health department. The position is graded as Professional Nurse: Specialty PN-B1 at Grade 1 or Grade 2, with a maximum of twenty one-hour sessions per week. Successful applicants will be placed on a sessional database and may be called upon to work at designated hospitals in the Capricorn, Mopani, Sekhukhune, Vhembe and Waterberg districts. These include Pietersburg, Mankweng, Letaba, St Ritas, Philadelphia, Tshilidzini and Mokopane hospitals. The specialty disciplines covered are operational theatre nursing, adult critical care, child nursing, child critical care, trauma, advanced midwifery and neonatal nursing science, ophthalmology, orthopaedics and renal nursing.

To be considered, applicants must hold a minimum R425 qualification, meaning a diploma or degree in nursing or an equivalent qualification that allows registration with the South African Nursing Council as a professional nurse. A post-basic nursing qualification in one of the listed specialty areas is also required, with a duration of at least one year and accredited by the SANC, except in the case of neonatal ICU nursing. Current registration with the SANC in the relevant specialty is essential. For appointment at Grade 1, a minimum of four years of appropriate nursing experience after registration as a professional nurse in general nursing is required. For Grade 2, candidates need at least fourteen years of such experience, of which ten years must be in the relevant specialty after obtaining the post-basic qualification. All candidates must be willing to work shifts, flexi-hours, weekends, public holidays and overtime when required.

The role demands strong clinical knowledge and skills in the nursing care processes and procedures specific to the chosen specialty. Good communication, report writing, facilitation, liaison, networking and problem-solving abilities are essential, along with information management skills and computer literacy. The key performance areas include providing direction and supervision for the implementation of nursing care plans, ensuring quality patient care, and practising nursing in line with relevant standards, quality indicators, legislation and regulations. The nurse will work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary clinical team and is expected to utilise human, material and physical resources efficiently and effectively.

This is a sessional appointment, meaning remuneration is based on recognised experience after registration with the SANC, at sessional rates approved by the Department of Public Service and Administration. The recruitment is aimed at building a database of sessional professional nurses for the province. As a government position, it offers the chance to contribute to public healthcare in Limpopo while maintaining flexibility through session-based work. Applicants should ensure they meet the specialist qualification and experience criteria before applying, and should be prepared for the demands of hospital-based specialty nursing.
