This opportunity is for experienced professional nurses to take on sessional specialty appointments within public hospitals across the Limpopo Province, working for the Department of Health. The posts are structured as Professional Nurse Specialty, graded at PN-B1 Grade 1 to Grade 2, with a maximum of 20 sessions per week per nurse, where one session is equivalent to one hour. There is also a parallel category for Professional Nurse with Midwifery at Grades 1 to 3, following the same sessional appointment model. Successful candidates will be placed at designated hospitals across the Capricorn, Mopani, Sekhukhune, Vhembe and Waterberg districts, including institutions such as Pietersburg Hospital, Mankweng Hospital, Letaba Hospital, St Ritas Hospital, Philadelphia Hospital, Tshilidzini Hospital and Mokopane Hospital, among others, with various hospital sites for the midwifery roles.

The specialty disciplines available are wide-ranging and include Operational Theatre, Critical Care Adult (ICU), Child Nursing (Paediatrics), Child Critical Care Nursing (ICU), Trauma, Advanced Midwifery and Neonatal Nursing Science, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics and Renal nursing. For appointment to the specialty posts, candidates must hold a minimum basic R425 qualification, meaning a Diploma or Degree in Nursing, or an equivalent qualification that allows registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse. In addition, applicants need a post-basic nursing qualification in one of the specified specialty areas, accredited with the SANC and of at least one year duration, with the exception of Neonatal ICU nursing. Current registration with the SANC as a Professional Nurse in the relevant specialty is essential. For entry at Grade 1, a minimum of four years appropriate and recognisable nursing experience after registration in General Nursing is required, while Grade 2 demands at least fourteen years of nursing experience, of which ten years must be relevant experience in the specific specialty after obtaining the post-basic qualification.

The role involves directing and supervising the implementation of the nursing care plan to ensure quality patient care, practising nursing and healthcare in line with applicable standards, quality indicators, legislation and regulations, and working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary clinical team. Nurses must also utilise human, material and physical resources effectively and efficiently. Key skills required include a thorough knowledge of nursing care processes and procedures within the relevant specialty, good communication and report writing abilities, facilitation, liaison, networking and problem-solving skills, information management skills, and computer literacy. Applicants must be willing to work shifts, flexi-hours, weekends, public holidays and overtime as needed. Sessional remuneration will be determined according to recognisable experience after registration with the SANC, following the sessional rates approved by the Department of Public Service and Administration. These sessional appointments form part of a professional nurses database and offer a flexible yet formal way for qualified specialist nurses to contribute across multiple hospitals, with application links provided separately for each specialty and institution.
