This vacancy offers qualified specialist nurses the opportunity to serve on a sessional basis as Professional Nurses in the specialty grade PN-B1, at public hospitals across the Limpopo province. The appointment is structured as a maximum of twenty sessions per week, with each session equivalent to one hour, making this a flexible but potentially substantial working arrangement for experienced nursing professionals. Positions are available at Pietersburg Hospital and Mankweng Hospital in the Capricorn District, Letaba Hospital in Mopani, St Ritas Hospital and Philadelphia Hospital in Sekhukhune, Tshilidzini Hospital in Vhembe, and Mokopane Hospital in Waterberg. The specialty disciplines open for these sessional appointments include operational theatre nursing, critical care for adults, child nursing (paediatrics), child critical care nursing, trauma nursing, advanced midwifery and neonatal nursing science, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, and renal nursing.

Candidates must hold a minimum basic R425 qualification, which is a diploma or degree in nursing or an equivalent qualification that allows registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse. In addition, a post-basic nursing qualification in one of the listed specialty areas is required, lasting at least one year and accredited by the SANC in that specialty, with the exception of neonatal ICU nursing. Current registration with the SANC as a Professional Nurse in the relevant specialty is also essential. For appointment at Grade 1, applicants need at least four years of appropriate, recognisable experience in nursing after registering as a Professional Nurse with the SANC in general nursing. For Grade 2, a minimum of fourteen years of appropriate nursing experience is required, of which ten years must be specific experience in the relevant specialty after obtaining the post-basic qualification. This grading structure allows experienced nurses to be recognised for their depth of practice.

The role demands a solid command of nursing care processes and procedures within the chosen specialty, along with good communication, report writing, facilitation, liaison, networking, and problem-solving abilities. Information management skills and computer literacy are also necessary. Nurses appointed to these sessional posts will be expected to provide direction and supervision for the implementation of nursing care plans, ensuring quality patient care at all times. They must practice nursing and healthcare in line with applicable standards, quality indicators, legislation, and regulations relevant to nursing and healthcare in South Africa. Working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary clinical team is a core part of the role, as is the efficient and effective use of human, material, and physical resources. These responsibilities place the sessional professional nurse in a key position to maintain service excellence in busy hospital environments.

A notable condition of these appointments is the willingness to work shifts, flexi-hours, weekends, public holidays, and overtime when required, reflecting the round-the-clock nature of hospital care. Sessional remuneration is determined according to the experience recognised after registration with the SANC, using rates approved by the DPSA, and will be graded accordingly. The positions form part of a broader professional nurses database for sessional employment, meaning that successful applicants may be called upon to fill temporary or periodic staffing needs at the listed institutions. This is an ideal opportunity for specialist nurses who wish to contribute their expertise to public healthcare in Limpopo while maintaining a flexible working schedule.
