The Limpopo Department of Health is offering sessional appointments for professional nurses with specialist qualifications, as well as for professional nurses with midwifery, across multiple hospitals in the Capricorn, Mopani, Sekhukhune, Vhembe, and Waterberg districts. These are part-time posts limited to a maximum of twenty one-hour sessions per week per nurse, providing flexibility for healthcare professionals to contribute their expertise while maintaining a sessional schedule. The specialty posts are graded at PN-B1, with both Grade 1 and Grade 2 levels available, and cover a wide range of clinical disciplines including operational theatre, adult critical care, child nursing, paediatric intensive care, trauma, advanced midwifery and neonatal nursing science, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, renal nursing, and paediatric child nursing. Hospitals involved include Pietersburg, Mankweng, Letaba, St Ritas, Philadelphia, Tshilidzini, and Mokopane, among others.
To be considered for the specialty posts, candidates must hold a basic R425 qualification, such as a diploma or degree in nursing, that allows registration with the South African Nursing Council as a professional nurse. In addition, a post-basic nursing qualification in one of the recognised specialty areas is required, with a minimum duration of one year and accredited by the SANC, except for neonatal ICU nursing where a different arrangement applies. Current registration with the SANC in the appropriate specialty is essential. For Grade 1, applicants need at least four years of appropriate nursing experience after registration in general nursing. For Grade 2, a minimum of fourteen years of post-registration experience is required, of which ten years must be in the relevant specialty after obtaining the post-basic qualification. Candidates must also be willing to work shifts, flexi-hours, weekends, public holidays, and overtime as needed.
The role involves directing and supervising the implementation of nursing care plans, ensuring quality patient care, and practising within the framework of relevant legislation, standards, and quality indicators. Professional nurses will work collaboratively within multidisciplinary clinical teams and are expected to utilise human, material, and physical resources efficiently. Strong knowledge of nursing care processes in the relevant specialty, good communication and report-writing skills, facilitation and liaison abilities, problem-solving, information management, and computer literacy are all essential competencies.
In addition to the specialty posts, the department is also recruiting sessional professional nurses with midwifery qualifications at Grade 1 to Grade 3 levels. These positions are available at numerous hospitals across the same districts, including Elim, Siloam, Donald Frazer, Malamulele, Messina, Louis Trichardt, Hayani, Ellisras, Witpoort, Warmbaths, FH Odendaal, George Masebe, Thabazimbi, Voortrekker, Mokopane, Helene Franz, Seshego, WF Knobel, Botlokwa, Lebowakgomo, Zebediela, Pietersburg-Mankweng Complex, Thabamoopo, Nkhensani, Dr CN Phatudi, Maphutha L Malatjie, Kgapane, Sekororo, Van Velden, Letaba, and Evuxakeni hospitals. Remuneration for all sessional posts is based on appropriate and recognisable experience after registration with the SANC, using sessional rates approved by the Department of Public Service and Administration. Applications are made through the specific online links provided for each hospital and specialty, and candidates may also be placed on the professional nurses sessional database. These sessional appointments offer a valuable opportunity for experienced nurses to support public healthcare services across Limpopo while earning remuneration that reflects their level of experience and specialty qualification.
