The Limpopo Department of Health is establishing a sessional professional nurse database and invites applications from suitably qualified nurses for two categories of appointment. The first is Professional Nurse: Specialty (PN-B1) Grade 1–2, covering a range of specialty disciplines including operational theatre, critical care adult (ICU), child nursing (paediatrics), child critical care nursing (ICU), trauma, advanced midwifery and neonatal nursing science, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, renal, and paediatric or child nursing. The second is Professional Nurse with Midwifery Grade 1–3. Both are sessional posts, meaning work is offered in hourly sessions, with a maximum of 20 sessions per week per professional nurse, and one session equals one hour. These appointments are based at various hospitals across the Capricorn, Mopani, Sekhukhune, Vhembe, and Waterberg districts, including Pietersburg, Mankweng, Letaba, St Ritas, Philadelphia, Tshilidzini, and Mokopane hospitals for the specialty posts, and a broader list of hospitals for the midwifery posts.

Applicants for the specialty posts must hold a minimum basic R425 qualification, namely a diploma or degree in nursing or an equivalent qualification that allows registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a professional nurse. In addition, a post-basic nursing qualification in one of the listed specialty areas is required, with a minimum duration of one year and accredited by the SANC in the relevant specialty, except for neonatal ICU nursing. Current registration with the SANC as a professional nurse in the appropriate specialty is essential. For appointment at Grade 1, a minimum of four years of appropriate and recognisable experience in nursing after registration as a professional nurse with the SANC in general nursing is required. For Grade 2, candidates need at least fourteen years of such experience, of which ten years must be appropriate experience in the relevant specialty after obtaining the post-basic qualification. The midwifery posts similarly require registration as a professional nurse with midwifery, with grading from 1 to 3 based on experience.

Candidates must demonstrate knowledge and skills in nursing care processes and procedures within their specialty area, as well as good communication, report writing, facilitation, liaison, networking, and problem-solving skills. Information management skills and computer literacy are also required. The key performance areas include providing direction and supervision for the implementation of the nursing care plan and ensuring quality patient care; practising nursing and healthcare in accordance with standards, quality indicators, legislation, and regulations; working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary clinical team; and utilising human, material, and physical resources efficiently and effectively.

These sessional appointments are part of a database of 138 professional nurses, and incumbents must be willing to work shifts, flexi-hours, weekends, public holidays, and overtime when required. Remuneration is sessional and will be based on appropriate and recognisable experience after registration with the SANC, as determined by sessional rates approved by the Department of Public Service and Administration. Applicants should note that these are not permanent posts but sessional opportunities, and they must apply through the specific hospital and specialty links provided for each district institution.
