This vacancy is for sessional professional nurse specialist appointments within Limpopo provincial health facilities, specifically at the PN-B1 Grade 1 and Grade 2 levels, with up to twenty one-hour sessions per week per nurse. The posts are based at hospitals across the Capricorn, Mopani, Sekhukhune, Vhembe and Waterberg districts, including facilities such as Pietersburg, Mankweng, Letaba, St Ritas, Philadelphia, Tshilidzini and Mokopane hospitals. Successful appointees will be placed in one of the recognised specialty disciplines, which include operational theatre, critical care adult ICU, child nursing and paediatrics, child critical care ICU, trauma, advanced midwifery and neonatal nursing science, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, renal, and paediatric or child nursing. A separate sessional stream for professional nurses with midwifery is also advertised, covering additional hospitals in the same districts and graded from Grade 1 to Grade 3.

To qualify, candidates must have the basic R425 diploma or degree in nursing, or an equivalent qualification that allows registration with the South African Nursing Council as a professional nurse. They must also hold a post-basic nursing qualification in one of the listed specialty areas, with a minimum duration of one year and accredited by the SANC, except in the case of neonatal ICU nursing. Current registration with the SANC in the appropriate specialty is essential. For appointment at Grade 1, a minimum of four years of appropriate or recognisable nursing experience after registration as a professional nurse in general nursing is required. For Grade 2, candidates need fourteen years of appropriate experience, of which ten years must be in the relevant specialty after obtaining the post-basic qualification. The midwifery posts are similarly sessional, with remuneration based on recognised experience and sessional rates approved by the Department of Public Service and Administration.

The key performance areas include providing direction and supervision for the implementation of the nursing care plan and ensuring quality patient care. Nurses must practise nursing and healthcare in accordance with professional standards, quality indicators, legislation and regulations relevant to the field. They will work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary clinical team and use human, material and physical resources efficiently and effectively. The role demands strong knowledge of nursing care processes in the relevant specialty, good communication and report-writing skills, facilitation, liaison, networking and problem-solving abilities, information management skills and computer literacy. Candidates must be willing to work shifts, flexi-hours, weekends, public holidays and overtime when required. These sessional appointments are part of the department’s professional nurses database for sessional work and are intended to maintain specialist nursing capacity across Limpopo’s hospitals, with applicants expected to indicate their preferred specialty and centre when responding.
