The Limpopo Department of Health is advertising sessional specialty appointments for professional nurses at a range of hospitals across the Capricorn, Mopani, Sekhukhune, Vhembe and Waterberg districts. These are hourly, part-time posts, with one session equal to one hour and a maximum of 20 sessions per week per nurse. The specialties covered include operational theatre, critical care adult ICU, child nursing (paediatrics), child critical care ICU, trauma, advanced midwifery and neonatal nursing science, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, and renal nursing. Depending on the discipline, successful applicants may be placed at hospitals such as Pietersburg, Mankweng, Letaba, St Ritas, Philadelphia, Tshilidzini or Mokopane, among others. The positions form part of a sessional professional nurses database, meaning appointments are made on a session-by-session basis rather than as permanent full-time posts.
To be considered, applicants must hold a basic R425 qualification, namely a diploma or degree in nursing or an equivalent qualification that allows registration with the South African Nursing Council as a professional nurse. A post-basic nursing qualification in one of the listed specialty areas is also required, with a minimum duration of one year and accreditation by the SANC, except in the case of neonatal ICU nursing. Current registration with the SANC in the appropriate specialty is essential. For appointment at Grade 1, a minimum of four years of appropriate nursing experience after registration as a professional nurse is needed. For Grade 2, candidates must have at least fourteen years of nursing experience, of which ten years must be in the relevant specialty after obtaining the post-basic qualification.
The core duties involve providing direction and supervision for the implementation of nursing care plans, ensuring quality patient care, and practising nursing in line with relevant standards, legislation and regulations. Nurses will work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary clinical team and must use human, material and physical resources efficiently and effectively. The role requires sound knowledge of nursing care processes and procedures in the relevant specialty, along with good communication, report writing, facilitation, liaison, networking and problem-solving skills. Information management skills and computer literacy are also necessary.
These sessional appointments demand a willingness to work shifts, flexi-hours, weekends, public holidays and overtime when required. Remuneration is based on DPSA-approved sessional rates and is determined according to the candidate’s appropriate and recognisable experience after registration with the SANC. This is a valuable opportunity for specialist nurses to contribute to public healthcare delivery in Limpopo while enjoying flexible working arrangements.
