This sessional appointment is for experienced Professional Nurses who hold a recognised specialty qualification and wish to work on an hourly basis at selected public hospitals in Limpopo. The role is graded as Professional Nurse Specialty PN-B1, with Grade 1 and Grade 2 levels, and involves delivering expert nursing care in one of several critical and specialised disciplines. These include operational theatre nursing, adult critical care, child nursing and child critical care, trauma, advanced midwifery and neonatal nursing science, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, and renal nursing. Successful appointees will be based at hospitals across the Capricorn, Mopani, Sekhukhune, Vhembe and Waterberg districts, including Pietersburg, Mankweng, Letaba, St Ritas, Philadelphia, Tshilidzini and Mokopane hospitals. The sessional nature of the post means that each nurse may be contracted for a maximum of twenty one-hour sessions per week, offering flexibility while helping the department maintain specialist coverage.

Candidates must meet the inherent requirements of the post. This includes a minimum basic R425 qualification, namely a diploma or degree in nursing or an equivalent qualification that allows registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse. In addition, applicants must hold a post-basic nursing qualification in one of the listed specialty areas, with a minimum duration of one year and accredited by the SANC, except in the case of neonatal ICU nursing. Current registration with the SANC as a Professional Nurse in the relevant specialty is essential. For appointment at Grade 1, a minimum of four years of appropriate or recognisable experience in nursing after registration as a Professional Nurse in general nursing is required. For Grade 2, candidates need at least fourteen years of such experience, of which ten years must be in the relevant specialty after obtaining the post-basic qualification. A willingness to work shifts, flexi-hours, weekends, public holidays and overtime is also required.

The key performance areas for this role centre on providing direction and supervision in the implementation of nursing care plans, ensuring quality patient care, and practising nursing in line with professional standards, quality indicators, legislation and regulations. Nurses will work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary clinical team and must use human, material and physical resources efficiently and effectively. The department also expects sound knowledge and skills in nursing care processes and procedures within the relevant specialty, along with good communication, report writing, facilitation, liaison, networking and problem-solving skills. Information management skills and computer literacy are also required.

Remuneration is sessional and will be based on appropriate and recognisable experience after registration with the SANC, as determined by sessional rates approved by the Department of Public Service and Administration. The same listing also includes a separate sessional appointment for Professional Nurses with Midwifery at Grade 1 to Grade 3, based at a wider range of hospitals in Vhembe, Waterberg, Capricorn and Mopani districts. These posts follow the same sessional model of up to twenty one-hour sessions per week. Applicants interested in either stream should note that the department is building a sessional database for professional nurses, and appointments will be made from that database as needs arise.
