This vacancy offers professional nurses with a recognised specialty qualification the opportunity to serve on a sessional basis within public hospitals across the Limpopo province. The appointment is made as a Professional Nurse: Specialty at Grade 1 or Grade 2, with work structured as hourly sessions up to a maximum of twenty sessions per week per nurse. Successful candidates will be placed at one of the specified hospitals in the Capricorn, Mopani, Sekhukhune, Vhembe or Waterberg districts, including institutions such as Pietersburg, Mankweng, Letaba, St Ritas, Philadelphia, Tshilidzini and Mokopane hospitals. The specialty disciplines covered are broad and include operating theatre nursing, adult intensive care, paediatric nursing, child critical care, trauma nursing, advanced midwifery and neonatal nursing science, ophthalmology, orthopaedics and renal nursing.
To be considered, applicants must hold a basic R425 qualification in nursing, namely a diploma or degree in nursing or an equivalent that allows registration with the South African Nursing Council as a professional nurse. In addition, a post-basic nursing qualification in one of the listed specialty areas is required, with a minimum duration of one year and accredited by the SANC, except in the case of neonatal ICU nursing where a different arrangement applies. Current registration with the SANC in the relevant specialty is essential. For appointment at Grade 1, a minimum of four years of appropriate nursing experience after registration as a professional nurse in general nursing is required. For Grade 2, candidates need at least fourteen years of such experience, of which ten years must be in the relevant specialty after obtaining the post-basic qualification.
Candidates must demonstrate sound knowledge and skills in nursing care processes and procedures within their specialty. Good communication, report writing, facilitation, liaison, networking and problem-solving abilities are expected, along with information management skills and computer literacy. The role demands a willingness to work shifts, flexi-hours, weekends, public holidays and overtime as required.
The key performance areas include providing direction and supervision for the implementation of nursing care plans and ensuring quality patient care. Nurses will practise in line with professional standards, quality indicators, legislation and regulations relevant to nursing and healthcare. They will work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary clinical team and must utilise human, material and physical resources efficiently and effectively.
This is a sessional appointment, meaning remuneration is determined according to approved sessional rates based on recognisable experience after registration with the SANC. The posts are part of a professional nurses database for sessional appointments, and applicants are expected to apply specifically for their chosen hospital and specialty discipline. The nature of the work requires flexibility and a commitment to service delivery across different shifts and settings.
