This vacancy is for a Professional Nurse: Specialty, graded at PN-B1, on a sessional appointment basis within the Limpopo Department of Health. The role involves providing specialised nursing care at designated hospitals across the Capricorn, Mopani, Sekhukhune, Vhembe and Waterberg districts. Appointments are made for a maximum of twenty one-hour sessions per week per nurse, making this a flexible, part-time arrangement. The specialty disciplines covered include operational theatre nursing, adult critical care (ICU), child nursing and paediatrics, child critical care nursing, trauma nursing, advanced midwifery and neonatal nursing science, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, renal nursing, and paediatric or child nursing. Candidates must apply for a specific hospital and specialty, as the posts are distributed across the listed institutions.

To be considered, applicants must hold a minimum basic R425 qualification, namely a diploma or degree in nursing or an equivalent qualification that permits registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Professional Nurse. In addition, a post-basic nursing qualification in one of the recognised specialty areas is required, with a minimum duration of one year and accredited by the SANC, except in the case of neonatal ICU nursing. Current registration with the SANC as a Professional Nurse in the relevant specialty is essential. For appointment at Grade 1, a minimum of four years of appropriate or recognisable nursing experience after registration as a Professional Nurse in general nursing is required. For Grade 2, the requirement is a minimum of fourteen years of appropriate or recognisable nursing experience after registration, of which at least ten years must be in the relevant specialty after obtaining the post-basic qualification. Candidates must also be willing to work shifts, flexi-hours, weekends, public holidays and overtime as required.

The ideal candidate will have sound knowledge and skills in nursing care processes and procedures within the relevant specialty, as well as good communication, report writing, facilitation, liaison, networking and problem-solving abilities. Information management skills and computer literacy are also required. The key performance areas include providing direction and supervision for the implementation of nursing care plans and ensuring quality patient care. The nurse will practice nursing and healthcare in line with relevant standards, quality indicators, legislation and regulations, and will work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary clinical team. Efficient and effective utilisation of human, material and physical resources is also a core responsibility.

Remuneration is on a sessional basis, determined according to the nurse’s appropriate and recognisable experience after SANC registration, using sessional rates approved by the Department of Public Service and Administration. The post is part of a sessional professional nurses database, and successful applicants will be placed on this database for the relevant hospital and specialty. This is a sessional appointment rather than a permanent post, and the number of sessions per week is capped at twenty. Applicants should note that they need to apply through the specific application links provided for each district hospital and specialty discipline.
