This sessional appointment offers qualified professional nurses the opportunity to serve in a specialist capacity across multiple hospitals in Limpopo's Capricorn, Mopani, Sekhukhune, Vhembe and Waterberg districts. The role is graded as Professional Nurse: Specialty (PN-B1) at Grade 1 or Grade 2, with a maximum of 20 one-hour sessions per week. Successful candidates will be placed at hospitals such as Pietersburg, Mankweng, Letaba, St Ritas, Philadelphia, Tshilidzini and Mokopane, depending on the specialty discipline and operational needs. Specialty areas include operational theatre, critical care adult ICU, child nursing (paediatrics), child critical care ICU, trauma, advanced midwifery and neonatal nursing science, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, renal, and paediatric/child nursing.
Applicants must hold a minimum basic R425 qualification — a diploma or degree in nursing or an equivalent qualification that permits registration with the South African Nursing Council as a professional nurse. In addition, a post-basic nursing qualification in one of the listed specialty areas is required, with a minimum duration of one year and accreditation with the SANC, except for neonatal ICU nursing. Current registration with the SANC in the relevant specialty is essential. For appointment at Grade 1, candidates need at least four years of appropriate and recognisable nursing experience after registration in general nursing. For Grade 2, the requirement is at least fourteen years of such experience, of which ten years must be in the relevant specialty after obtaining the post-basic qualification.
The core duties involve providing direction and supervision for the implementation of nursing care plans, ensuring quality patient care, and practising nursing in line with standards, quality indicators, legislation and regulations. The nurse will work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary clinical team and must utilise human, material and physical resources efficiently and effectively. Strong knowledge of nursing care processes and procedures in the relevant specialty is essential, along with good communication, report writing, facilitation, liaison, networking and problem-solving skills. Information management skills and computer literacy are also required.
Candidates must be willing to work shifts, flexi-hours, weekends, public holidays and overtime when required. Remuneration is sessional and based on appropriate and recognisable experience after registration with the SANC, determined by sessional rates approved by the Department of Public Service and Administration. This is an excellent opportunity for specialist nurses to contribute to public healthcare delivery in Limpopo while enjoying the flexibility of sessional work.
