This sessional appointment is for a Professional Nurse in a specialty discipline, placed on the PN-B1 grading and open to Grade 1 and Grade 2 candidates. The post is based at designated hospitals across the Capricorn, Mopani, Sekhukhune, Vhembe and Waterberg districts of Limpopo, including Pietersburg, Mankweng, Letaba, St Ritas, Philadelphia, Tshilidzini and Mokopane hospitals. The role operates on a session-by-session basis, with a maximum of 20 one-hour sessions per week per professional nurse. Specialty disciplines covered are broad and include operational theatre nursing, adult critical care/ICU, child nursing/paediatrics, child critical care/ICU, trauma nursing, advanced midwifery and neonatal nursing science, ophthalmology, orthopaedics and renal nursing.
Candidates must hold a basic R425 nursing qualification, such as a diploma or degree in nursing, that allows registration with the South African Nursing Council as a professional nurse. In addition, a post-basic nursing qualification in one of the specified specialty areas is required, accredited by the SANC and of at least one year’s duration, with the exception of neonatal ICU nursing where the requirement differs. Current registration with the SANC in the relevant specialty is essential. For appointment at Grade 1, an applicant needs a minimum of four years of appropriate and recognisable nursing experience after registration as a professional nurse in general nursing. For Grade 2, the requirement is at least fourteen years of such experience, of which ten years must be in the relevant specialty after obtaining the post-basic qualification. Willingness to work shifts, flexi-hours, weekends, public holidays and overtime is a key condition.
The successful candidate will be responsible for providing direction and supervision in implementing the nursing care plan and ensuring quality patient care. This involves practising nursing and healthcare in line with professional standards, quality indicators, legislation and regulations. The nurse will collaborate within a multidisciplinary clinical team and must use human, material and physical resources efficiently. Strong knowledge of nursing care processes and procedures in the specialty is essential, along with good communication, report-writing, facilitation, liaison, networking and problem-solving skills. Information management abilities and computer literacy are also expected.
Remuneration is sessional and determined by the candidate’s appropriate, recognisable experience after SANC registration, using sessional rates approved by the Department of Public Service and Administration. The advertisement is part of the department’s effort to build a database of sessional professional nurses across the province. Appointment will be at the applicable grade based on experience. The same advertisement also lists separate sessional appointments for professional nurses with midwifery at additional hospitals in Vhembe, Waterberg, Capricorn and Mopani districts, though these are distinct from the specialty nurse posts. Applicants should note the sessional ceiling of 20 hours per week and should ensure they meet the specialty-specific requirements before applying.
