This sessional appointment offers registered professional nurses with a recognised specialty qualification the opportunity to join a provincial database for temporary, hourly-based work at selected public hospitals across Limpopo. The role is graded as Professional Nurse: Specialty (PN-B1) at either Grade 1 or Grade 2, with each session lasting one hour and a maximum of 20 sessions per week per nurse. The positions are based at Pietersburg and Mankweng Hospitals in Capricorn District, Letaba Hospital in Mopani, St Ritas and Philadelphia Hospitals in Sekhukhune, Tshilidzini Hospital in Vhembe, and Mokopane Hospital in Waterberg. Specialty disciplines covered include operational theatre, critical care adult (ICU), child nursing (paediatrics), child critical care nursing (ICU), trauma, advanced midwifery and neonatal nursing science, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, renal, and paediatric/child nursing. This is not a permanent post but rather a sessional pool from which hospitals can draw skilled nurses as needed, making flexibility and availability essential.

To be considered, candidates must hold a basic R425 qualification, such as a diploma or degree in nursing, that permits registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Professional Nurse. In addition, a post-basic nursing qualification in one of the listed specialties is required, with a minimum duration of one year and accredited by SANC, except for neonatal ICU nursing where a different arrangement applies. Current registration with SANC in the appropriate specialty is mandatory. For Grade 1, applicants need at least four years of appropriate experience in general nursing after registration. For Grade 2, a minimum of fourteen years of nursing experience is required, of which ten years must be in the relevant specialty after obtaining the post-basic qualification. Sessional remuneration is determined by the Department of Public Service and Administration rates, based on recognisable experience, and is paid per session.

The core duties involve directing and supervising the implementation of nursing care plans to ensure quality patient care, practising nursing in line with professional standards, quality indicators, legislation, and regulations, collaborating within a multidisciplinary clinical team, and using human, material, and physical resources efficiently. Nurses must also possess strong knowledge of nursing care processes in their specialty, good communication and report-writing skills, facilitation and liaison abilities, networking and problem-solving capabilities, information management skills, and computer literacy. A willingness to work shifts, flexi-hours, weekends, public holidays, and overtime is essential. This sessional database is an important mechanism for maintaining staffing levels in critical specialty areas across the province, and applicants should be prepared to respond to short-notice assignments. The post is subject to the usual verification of qualifications and registration with SANC.
