This sessional vacancy offers registered professional nurses the opportunity to work on a part-time, hourly basis within public hospitals across several Limpopo districts, namely Capricorn, Mopani, Sekhukhune, Vhembe and Waterberg. The main post is for Professional Nurse: Specialty at Grade 1 or Grade 2, with a maximum of twenty sessions per week, where one session equals one hour. A parallel stream within the same advertisement covers Professional Nurses with Midwifery at Grade 1 to Grade 3, also on sessional appointments, based at a wider network of hospitals in the same districts. These are not permanent posts but sessional arrangements, allowing the department to draw on experienced nurses to support specific clinical services.

For the specialty stream, candidates must hold a minimum basic R425 qualification, meaning a diploma or degree in nursing that permits registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse. In addition, a post-basic nursing qualification of at least one year, accredited by the SANC, is required in one of the recognised specialty disciplines. These disciplines include operational theatre nursing, critical care adult ICU, child nursing or paediatrics, child critical care ICU, trauma nursing, advanced midwifery and neonatal nursing science, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, and renal nursing. Current registration with the SANC as a Professional Nurse in the relevant specialty is essential. For appointment at Grade 1, a minimum of four years of appropriate and recognisable nursing experience after registration in general nursing is required. For Grade 2, the requirement is at least fourteen years of such experience, of which ten years must be in the relevant specialty after obtaining the post-basic qualification. The midwifery stream similarly requires appropriate SANC registration and experience, with remuneration graded from one to three based on recognisable experience.

The core duties of these sessional professional nurses include providing direction and supervision for the implementation of nursing care plans and ensuring quality patient care. They must practise nursing and healthcare in line with professional standards, quality indicators, legislation and regulations applicable to nursing and healthcare in South Africa. They are expected to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary clinical teams and to utilise human, material and physical resources efficiently and effectively. The role demands sound knowledge of nursing care processes and procedures in the relevant specialty, as well as good communication, report writing, facilitation, liaison, networking and problem-solving skills. Information management skills and computer literacy are also required, reflecting the administrative and coordination responsibilities that accompany clinical duties.

Candidates must be willing to work shifts, flexi-hours, weekends, public holidays and overtime when required, as hospital services operate around the clock. Sessional remuneration is determined by the Department of Public Service and Administration approved sessional rates, based on appropriate and recognisable experience after registration with the SANC. The advertisement forms part of a professional nurses sessional database and provides hospital-specific specialty application links for each district, allowing applicants to target their preferred institution and discipline. This is an ideal opportunity for experienced specialist nurses seeking flexible, supplementary work within the provincial health system while contributing their expertise to public hospital care.
