This vacancy offers sessional appointments for professional nurses within the Limpopo Department of Health, working across multiple district hospitals. The main post is for a Professional Nurse: Specialty, graded at PN-B1 Grade 1 to Grade 2, with a maximum of twenty one-hour sessions per week. These sessions are spread across hospitals in Capricorn, Mopani, Sekhukhune, Vhembe, and Waterberg districts, including facilities such as Pietersburg, Mankweng, Letaba, St Ritas, Philadelphia, Tshilidzini, and Mokopane hospitals. The specialty disciplines covered are broad and include Operational Theatre, Critical Care Adult (ICU), Child Nursing (Paediatrics), Child Critical Care Nursing (ICU), Trauma, Advanced Midwifery and Neonatal Nursing Science, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics, Renal, and Paediatric or Child Nursing. A second related sessional post is also advertised for Professional Nurses with Midwifery, at a wider list of hospitals across the same districts, with remuneration similarly based on recognisable experience.
For the specialty post, candidates must hold a basic R425 qualification, meaning a diploma or degree in nursing or an equivalent that allows registration with the South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse. In addition, a post-basic nursing qualification in one of the listed specialty areas is required, with a minimum duration of one year and accredited by the SANC, except for Neonatal ICU nursing. Current registration with the SANC as a Professional Nurse in the appropriate specialty is essential. Experience requirements are graded: Grade 1 calls for at least four years of appropriate or recognisable nursing experience after registration in General Nursing, while Grade 2 requires a minimum of fourteen years, of which ten must be in the relevant specialty after obtaining the post-basic qualification. All appointees must be willing to work shifts, flexi-hours, weekends, public holidays, and overtime as needed.
The key performance areas for the specialty role include providing direction and supervision for the implementation of the nursing care plan and ensuring quality patient care. Nurses must practise in line with standards, quality indicators, legislation, and regulations relevant to nursing and healthcare. They are expected to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary clinical team and to utilise human, material, and physical resources efficiently and effectively. The required knowledge and skills include a solid understanding of nursing care processes and procedures in the relevant specialty, good communication and report writing abilities, facilitation, liaison, networking, and problem-solving skills, information management skills, and computer literacy.
Sessional remuneration is determined by the appropriate or recognisable experience after registration with the SANC, using sessional rates approved by the DPSA. The appointment is structured as a sessional database for professional nurses, allowing flexible deployment across the identified hospitals. This is an opportunity for qualified specialist nurses to contribute to public healthcare delivery on a sessional basis while earning according to their level of experience and specialty registration.
