The Limpopo Department of Health is advertising sessional appointments for professional nurses in specialty disciplines and in midwifery, based at public hospitals across the Capricorn, Mopani, Sekhukhune, Vhembe and Waterberg districts. These are part-time posts structured as sessions, with each session lasting one hour and a maximum of 20 sessions per week per nurse. The specialty posts are graded as Professional Nurse Specialty PN-B1 Grade 1 and Grade 2, while the midwifery posts are graded from 1 to 3. Remuneration is sessional and determined according to the nurse's appropriate and recognisable experience after registration with the South African Nursing Council, using approved sessional rates.
The specialty nurse positions cover a range of clinical disciplines, including operational theatre, adult critical care, child nursing, child critical care, trauma, advanced midwifery and neonatal nursing science, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, renal, and paediatric or child nursing. Successful candidates will be expected to provide direction and supervision in the implementation of nursing care plans, ensuring that quality patient care is delivered in line with professional standards, quality indicators, legislation and regulations. They will work collaboratively within multidisciplinary clinical teams and must use human, material and physical resources efficiently and effectively. The role also requires a willingness to work shifts, flexi-hours, weekends, public holidays and overtime as needed.
To qualify for the specialty posts, applicants must hold a basic R425 qualification, namely a diploma or degree in nursing or an equivalent qualification that allows registration with the South African Nursing Council as a professional nurse. In addition, they must have a post-basic nursing qualification in one of the listed specialty areas, with a minimum duration of one year and accredited by the SANC, except in the case of neonatal ICU nursing. Current registration with the SANC as a professional nurse in the appropriate specialty is essential. For appointment at Grade 1, a minimum of four years of appropriate or recognisable nursing experience after registration in general nursing is required. For Grade 2, candidates need at least fourteen years of such experience, of which ten years must be in the relevant specialty after obtaining the post-basic qualification.
The midwifery sessional posts are available at a broader list of hospitals in the Vhembe, Waterberg, Capricorn and Mopani districts, including regional and district hospitals. These positions are open to professional nurses with midwifery qualifications and follow the same sessional appointment model, with remuneration based on experience and SANC registration. They share the same underlying expectations of current registration, appropriate nursing experience, and a commitment to quality patient care.
Candidates for all posts should possess sound knowledge and skills in nursing care processes and procedures relevant to their specialty, as well as good communication, report writing, facilitation, liaison, networking and problem-solving skills. Information management skills and computer literacy are also required. The department maintains a sessional professional nurses database, and applications are made through the specific hospital and specialty links provided for each post. These sessional appointments offer an opportunity for experienced professional nurses to contribute to public healthcare delivery in Limpopo on a flexible, part-time basis.
