The Limpopo Department of Health is establishing a sessional database for qualified professional nurses to fill specialty and midwifery posts on an hourly-session basis, with each session equivalent to one hour and a maximum of 20 sessions per week per nurse. These appointments are designed to address staffing needs across multiple district hospitals, offering flexibility for nurses with advanced clinical qualifications to contribute their expertise in critical and specialised care areas. The main specialty stream, designated Professional Nurse: Specialty (PN-B1) at Grade 1 or Grade 2, covers disciplines such as operational theatre, adult critical care (ICU), child nursing and paediatrics, child critical care nursing, trauma, advanced midwifery and neonatal nursing science, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, and renal nursing. These posts are available at hospitals in the Capricorn, Mopani, Sekhukhune, Vhembe, and Waterberg districts, including Pietersburg, Mankweng, Letaba, St Ritas, Philadelphia, Tshilidzini, and Mokopane hospitals.
Candidates must hold a minimum R425 qualification, meaning a diploma or degree in nursing or an equivalent qualification that allows registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Professional Nurse. In addition, they must have a post-basic nursing qualification in one of the listed specialty areas, accredited by SANC and lasting at least one year, except for neonatal ICU nursing. Current registration with SANC in the relevant specialty is essential. For appointment at Grade 1, applicants need at least four years of appropriate nursing experience after registration as a Professional Nurse in general nursing. For Grade 2, the requirement is at least fourteen years of appropriate nursing experience, of which ten years must be in the relevant specialty after obtaining the post-basic qualification. All appointees must be willing to work shifts, flexi-hours, weekends, public holidays, and overtime as required.
The role demands strong knowledge of nursing care processes and procedures within the chosen specialty, as well as good communication, report writing, facilitation, liaison, networking, and problem-solving skills. Information management skills and computer literacy are also required. Key performance areas include directing and supervising the implementation of nursing care plans to ensure quality patient care, practising nursing in line with professional standards, quality indicators, legislation, and regulations, collaborating within multidisciplinary clinical teams, and using human, material, and physical resources efficiently and effectively.
In addition to the specialty posts, the department is also recruiting sessional Professional Nurses with Midwifery at Grade 1 to Grade 3. This stream covers a broader network of hospitals across the Vhembe, Waterberg, Capricorn, and Mopani districts, including Elim, Siloam, Donald Frazer, Malamulele, Messina, Louis Trichardt, Hayani, Ellisras, Witpoort, Warmbaths, FH Odendaal and MDR TB, George Masebe, Thabazimbi, Voortrekker, Mokopane, Helene Franz, Seshego, WF Knobel, Botlokwa, Lebowakgomo, Zebediela, Pietersburg-Mankweng Complex, Thabamoopo, Nkhensani, Dr CN Phatudi, Maphutha L Malatjie, Kgapane, Sekororo, Van Velden, Letaba, and Evuxakeni hospitals. Remuneration for both streams is sessional and based on appropriate, recognisable experience after registration with SANC, as determined by sessional rates approved by the Department of Public Service and Administration.
These sessional appointments offer a flexible way for experienced professional nurses to support public healthcare delivery in Limpopo while earning remuneration aligned to their grade and experience. Applicants should note the special conditions around shift work and overtime, and they will be expected to indicate their preferred hospital and specialty discipline when applying. The database approach means that successful candidates may be called upon as and when sessional needs arise at the participating hospitals.
